Russian Ambassador to Turkey assassinated

A body lies on the ground as a man with a pistol gestures at the scene of a shooting in Ankara, Turkey, on December 19.

In a caption, The Associated Press news agency described the man with the gun as the attacker. CNN has not independently confirmed the identities of the people in the photograph.

Authorities haven't said who they believe was responsible for the attack. Anadolu reported that the gunman had been neutralized. But it was not immediately clear whether the attacker was killed or captured by police.

The ambassador, Andrei Karlov, was several minutes into a speech at the embassy-sponsored exhibition in the capital, Ankara, when a man wearing a suit and tie shouted “Allahu Akbar” and fired at least eight shots, according to an AP photographer in the audience. The attacker also said some words in Russian and smashed several of the photos hung for the exhibition. There was panic as people ran for cover. NTV said three other people were wounded in the attack.

 

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Karlov was shot “when an unidentified assailant opened chaotic gunfire during a public event in Ankara.” She said Russia was in contact with Turkish officials about the incident.

 

U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby said U.S. officials were aware of reports about the shooting.

 

“We condemn this act of violence, whatever its source,” Kirby said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — An Ankara police officer dressed in a suit and tie shouted slogans about Syria's civil war after he killed Russia's ambassador to Turkey in front of stunned onlookers at a photo exhibition in the Turkish capital on Monday, according to officials and an Associated Press photographer who witnessed the shooting. Police later killed the assailant.

 

"Don't forget Aleppo, don't forget Syria!" the gunman shouted in Turkish, referring to the Syrian city where Russian bombardments have helped drive rebels from areas they had occupied for years during the war.

 

He also shouted "Allahu akbar," the Arabic phrase for "God is great" and continued in Arabic: "We are the descendants of those who supported the Prophet Muhammad, for jihad."

 

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said Altintas, who was born in 1994, had been an officer with Ankara's riot police squad for more than two years. Soylu did not give a motive for the attack.

This seems to be one of those things that we better keep in the back of our minds in the next several years when we see Russia taking certain steps.

 

Maybe I've been watching too many Bourne movies and The Blacklist. But, this appears to be something that is a small part in something much bigger.

Yeah I just know Turkey and Russia arent on the best terms, even before this incident. And Putin isnt the type of person to let something like this go. Turkey is also a NATO member so if Russia attacks, other NATO members might help Turkey. Could trigger some events just like the Archduke assassination did to start WWI. I hope not, but we will see.

Not sure what the implications of this are. But it can't be good. Guess we'll find out in the coming days.
