While Frazier and several other Group of 5 officials, who wished not be identified, support adding a Group of 5 playoff, plenty of Group of 5 officials oppose a separate playoff.

"Absolutely would not want a separate playoff," said a Group of 5 AD, "and I can't put enough exclamation points behind that."

American Conference commissioner Mike Aresco has no interest in it either.

"The answer is an emphatic no," Aresco said. "We compete for national championships like anyone else in FBS, including the Power 5, and have no interest in any kind of separate championship."

 

Why would they oppose this? Hmmm. Could it be they would lose their share of the money generated by the Power 5 play offs?

Just expand the playoff to 16+ teams and let the little guys in already. Conference champs in every other level of college football and every other sport in the NCAA get a shot at the title. They could still keep their meaningless bowl games, they would still hold the same weight and likely viewership.

I don't get how this would help the group of 5. If anything it'd hurt them. So you have your best teams play each other in the playoff instead of Power 5 teams? That won't help them get into the CFB Playoff. Sure it's difficult to get in, but not impossible. Houston could've gone in if they went undefeated, and they grew their brand by beating FSU in the Peach Bowl last year. I'm not a fan

Houston definitely would have made the playoff had they run the table holding wins over Oklahoma and Louisville. Even without those two unusually large wins for a group of 5 team, the odds of playing for the title are much higher now than they were under the BCS. The little guys can complain that the system is stacked against them but little guys have managed to climb to the top 4 in the past (TCU finished 3rd and 4th in the final BCS standings headed into bowl season in 2009 and 2010).

 

Western Michigan went 13-0 but does not have one single win that stands out. The MAC is a poor conference and their non-conference wins were against the 7th and 11th place Big Ten teams, plus one FCS team and another that was FCS very recently. If you want to get yourself into the conversation you have to find some better competition than perennial doormats from a power conference and even littler guys.

 

Don't blame the system when you've done nothing to set the bar high enough to warrant an invitation to the top level.
