2018 Offensive Line Recruiting

Recommended Posts

Hate to say it, but the same guys are back. And if you paid any attention to Spring Ball, they didn't look very well.

Good thing they have all Summer and Fall camp to continually improve. It may not be the 90's, but they'll be just fine this year.

Back to the topic at hand. This kid has that OT frame that everyone has been wanting and is athletic. Weight is a concern, but he has a year of high school, plus a redshirt year if our recent OL decisions tell us anything. He gets from 250ish to 285 or so by the time he's ready for that redshirt freshman year, he could be a pretty good player.

Pad level is consistently high but that's correctable. 6'7 isn't an excuse for that. Potential is there and this could be a good snag if we can reel him in but it's not a name that is going to save Cav from any grief amongst fans in the immediate future.

So when this kid continues to blow up and gets bigger and bigger offers, is the Cav can't recruit (or coach) discussion going to continue?

Look, OL and DL are the absolute toughest positions to recruit. Especially on the OL, besides maybe the few top guys in the country it is an absolute crapshoot on projecting how a kid is going to develop. Coaches are going to have their own criteria on what they are looking for when they watch film. You take a look at a kid like Beresford, he definitely has the frame and athleticism that you want to see in an OT.

2017 is going to be a big year for Cav and the O-Line, no doubt about that. I'm willing to take the wait and see approach now that he has multiple upperclassmen with experience. He's had 3 years with Gates, Foster, Farmer, Knevel and it's time that they show something.

Would rather have a lower rated 6'7 OT prospect with good athleticism than the higher rated 6'4 OT prospect that will just end up being a guard or center.

Also for those that are complaining about not going after the highest rated prospects, last year we spent significant time going after Sarell and Filiaga and missed out and the board was complaining we didn't have any back ups.

Cav has been an above average recruiter, just have to wait and see if he can develop them.

Please elaborate on this.

If this kid had another 2-3 points next to his rating (which is very, very possible if he picks up a few more offers and continues solid work at camps in the summer) people would not be complaining. He fits what we need way better than Stratford and Bleich did and has the potential to be rated roughly the same as them by the time we get to next December.

We apparently took one of these last year.

Yes please elaborate....

Cav's average recruit since being here is 86.93.

The last two classes (This year and last year) you have 5 of his lowest 6 recruits at Neb and only two rated above his "average" at Neb.

For comparison Wisconsin's average since the time Cav got here is 88.61. Nearly a full 2 points higher.
