Resistance Action Items

Recommended Posts

Knapp, I understand what you are saying. Yes Maxine didn't incite violence  - I agree.  Again my concern is the next level. I will also agree that Trump is already at that next level.  I'm hoping one of the sides will remain in the adult phase  - otherwise this will get uglier.   My concern is voiced towards Maxine because the Trumper camp is already in a cult like phase and no words of restraint will help.   I think we both agree  that Trump and his talk long ago went beyond what would be considered civil discourse and his words give cover (directly and indirectly and also as confirmed by those in the alt-right) for groups to take inappropriate action.

To be honest with you - I don't disagree wt what you are saying but I don't have time to 'argue' over the finer details today --- too rough of a day at work today (employee issues) to get engage any deeper on this.

But that's just it. The rhetoric is that "both sides" (a term you use frequently) need to calm down.

First, there aren't two sides. There are a minimum of three, and in reality dozens. We are not a nation of Democrats or Republicans.  Many of us are Independent, and personally, we all should be.

Second, the Democrats haven't left "the adult phase."  Continually saying that, instead of pointing the finger at the actual culprit, is part of the problem.

Focus less on what might happen if Democrats resist Trump.  Do more resisting Trump.

There's nothing at all equal in tone between Waters and Trump.  Waters is advocating peaceful protests.  Trump is actively threatening people (and businesses).

Equating the two, using the "both sides" phrase, is an inherently wrong framing of the situation.

I read their tones to be about the same. When has Trump called for violence?

BRB kindly pointed out that the state of Nebraska had other requirements at the link above, so if you like this site allows you to search your status in NE by name, county, dob etc.

CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES!

Calls have shown to be more impactful than texts, faxes, letters or emails.  They do tally who they hear from, so if you don't get a live person on the other end it's very valuable to leave a vm (just make sure to identify yourself as a constituent)

Wednesday will be declared national Call your Members of Congress Day - obviously there's a lot of issue with the government shut down currently, so if you have strong feelings about that it's a great time to give this system a try!

www.5calls.org

This will allow you to choose an issue you feel strongly about (shut down is the first on the options list on the left), punch in your zip and it will tell you who to call and give you a script for guidance.  I have found calling in the morning before 8 or 9 EST I typically get a vm, so I can quickly make 3-4 calls and go about my day.

ADVOCATE FOR AUTOMATIC VOTER REGISTRATION:

Verify: Does your state have Automatic Voter Registration (AVR)? (look up at:  http://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/automatic-voter-registration.aspx)

Call: Your two state legislators (look up at:  https://openstates.org/find_your_legislator/) and state elections official (look up at:  https://www.usa.gov/election-office  ).

Script 1 (for states without AVR): Hi. I’m from [ZIP] and I support automatic voter registration. A new report documents the huge impact of AVR, showing that it can increase voter registrations from 9% to 94%. AVR also empowers citizens with disabilities to exercise their right to vote. What is [NAME] doing to pass legislation to implement AVR in [STATE]?

Script 2 (for 16 states with AEVR ): I’m so glad that [State] has Automatic Voter Registration. Thank you for supporting voter participation, especially for our neighbors with disabilities.
