Insignificant gripes with media members who cover the Huskers

"Follow closely" as in watch a 6 minute interview? What is going on with the Nebraska media right now?

Don't understand your post.

I am just a little annoyed with some of the junior-level reporting going on. Nothing against BC, specifically. In fact, I normally like him.

However, since you put the quarter in... :boxosoap

I will give a for instance, but be warned, once the vail is lifted, it is hard to un-see what you see. For weeks, most media covering the Huskers have told us that Tanner is the clear #1. However, now that both Riley and Langs have told us that is crap and this is a true competition, you have media telling us that they are not "surprised" that this is a race given the talent levels of both guys. Sure both guys are talents, but the only reason they changed their narrative is not because they have some great insight to the program or are expert talent evaluators, it is that HCMR and the OC spoke in clear English and made that statement. So, yes, you are "surprised". In fact, it is quite frequent that the Husker media members are "not surprised" about an event, when weeks before they were arguing the other side. Just own it guys.

In fact, I was listening to the HOL podcast this morning, and within the same segment, the same guy talked about how it was an obvious choice to fire Miles then shortly after why it was obvious that Miles was retained. It is that "obvious" that you can argue both sides with yourself in the same conversation?

Anyway... :rant

I mean, they're sports journalists - glorified message board posters.

Facts. It just gets annoying.

Oh, and another thing that gets tired is when you hear these guys berating Husker fans for their overreactions, while they are the ones who stoke the flames.

That's a great point.

The guys from the OWH seem to intentionally troll Husker fans on a pretty regular basis. They've fueled and/or artificially created rivalries between Nebraska and Creighton, Iowa, surrounding state schools who recruit Nebraska kids, etc. They looooooove to talk about players who got away, and the implication is always that UNL dropped the ball (often ignoring that the kid was kinda average in HS and developed in college). That resonates with a lot of people so they get their jimmies rustled and respond. I've done it before I realized it's a tactic and not a deeply-held opinion.

In fact, oddly enough, I was just thinking of creating a thread where I asked people which local journalists they felt gave the best info on twitter and which ones they felt were just there to create stories for their own ends. The former are worth following, and the latter really aren't. A good national example of this is Andy Staples. I stopped following him years ago after realizing I hadn't learned a thing from him in years, but I'd witnessed umpteen dozen "spats" he's had with fans across the country. He's good at generating conversation, but it's all manufactured arguments.

Most reporting such as what you're upset about is the reporter's guess. I'm surprised that's such a big revelation. They follow a program and they have some more access than we do. But, that doesn't mean they talk to Riley on a day to day basis to get the latest ramblings of who is doing what as far as depth charts.

The media has given their opinions that Lee has an edge going into spring based on experience. Not sure why that's so controversial. It's the off season. Langs then comes out and says they are neck and neck. Are you shocked that the OC would say that after the 3rd spring practice when he really wants both players to fight for the starting job?

The title of the thread this was put in is appropriate.

Well, I created the title, thread, and OP, so I guess "thanks". However, you are missing the point that I was making. I do not condemn sports journalists from having nor expressing their opinions and then clarifying the situation when they learn the details. What annoys me is how some do not own their incorrect speculations, flip their positions, and say how they are "not surprised" that it played out the way they did. Like we (the consumers of their reports) are supposed to have social amnesia.

So, after weeks of beating the Tanner Lee drum, I am cool with them saying "Turns out the QB race is closer than we thought" as oppose to "Like we have been saying this whole time, the QB competition will be hot and heavy this spring".

Even though, I got mildly annoyed at the tweet posted above, I would say Brain Christopherson is a good follow.

Maybe it's part of the nature of college sports? I dunno...

It sort of seems like more NFL coverage is about staying above the fray. And college coverage is about mucking around in the thick of it.

Anyway, who knows if the QB race is actually that close. It obviously needs to be, or there isn't much of a competition. Lee may have a considerable edge but they have to make sure there's plenty for both players to work for. It's also really early in the Spring...

I said a month before he committed that there was no way we were going to get Lindsey. I'd read all the clippings and reports. That's simply how I saw it. If I were a reporter writing for a paper, that's what I would have said in the paper. As it turns out, I was wrong. Looking back though, I can see things that I was over looking and I would say now, I'm not surprised he is here.

If I were a reporter, you would expect me to have to now write an article apologizing for being wrong before? I wrote what my best guess is at the time. As time goes on, new information comes out and things change.

It's also possible that behind closed doors Langs told a few of these reporters that Lee has an edge. NOW.....in spring practice, Langs is really pushing the fact he sees them as equals to foster competition and not demoralize POB. As a reporter....I wouldn't be surprised about that.

My point is, your rant seems to be an over reaction to simple sports reporting and guessing in the off season on where things stand.

Now....your point about certain reports wanting to stir the pot.....I would agree.
