OL Feels Urgency to Improve

“We’ve got a lot of athletic guys up front, and it’s really letting us show our athleticism, and putting the ball on the edge,” Knevel said. “And I think if we continue that throughout fall camp, that could be a staple play for us.”

 

Whatever the play or plays might be, Nebraska points toward the 2017 season with a strong urgency to run the ball better.

 

The Huskers slipped from 5.3 yards per carry in 2014 to 4.7 in 2015 — after Ameer Abdullah left and a new offense arrived with Riley — and then sagged to a 4.2 average last season that ranked No. 87 nationally.

 

While the line could point to injuries and youth as potential reasons, that didn’t lessen the blow as that unit went to the offseason.

 

“We know this last year that our rushing decreased, and that bothered us,” Knevel said. “And for whatever reason it was — tougher opponents, or falling off at the end of the year — we talk about that a lot in our room. We want to try to keep that consistent.”

At the risk of reading WAAAAY to much into one sentense, I'll grasp at a straw and HOPE that "putting the ball on the edge" is indicative of Langs figuring out - to some extent - that being an Inside Zone team in college is not a good fit most of the time.

Right. An inside zone isn't a bad play in and of itself but it should be one of many different kinds of runs

The OL "...feels the urgency to improve?"

 

I like the "...we have to be better..." angle to this story, but I've heard this song and dance before. There's only one way to quiet your critics...play well all season and earn respect.

 

Protect Tanner Lee on passing downs, open holes for the RBs, etc. In other words, do your job.

At the risk of reading WAAAAY to much into one sentense, I'll grasp at a straw and HOPE that "putting the ball on the edge" is indicative of Langs figuring out - to some extent - that being an Inside Zone team in college is not a good fit most of the time.

Especially when you are not reading it. Baylor and oregon are inside zone teams that gash you with tempo, key screens, and qb option. It is hard to be an inside zone team being built like we are.

Most schools do inside zone, including Alabama. But unlike Langs, they all have a mix and variety to go along with it. :/
