Huskers Working on Up-Tempo Attack

Recommended Posts

“The fact that we lost a lot of players and basically our whole coaching staff, people are going to be like, ‘What are they going to do without three All-Americans and without two great assistant coaches?’ ” Hunter said. “So I think everyone might expect us to dip down and not be as good, but I think we’re using that as motivation.”

The big focus of the spring, Hunter said, has been energy. In volleyball, that often manifests in defensive effort, which Hunter said was on display in a closed scrimmage against Creighton last week. But the Huskers also are trying to push the pace on offense, reducing the time between Hunter’s sets and the attackers’ swings.

It was a strategy Nebraska has tinkered with the past couple of seasons before eventually settling into a more deliberate tempo that suited its best attackers, namely All-America opposite hitter Kadie Rolfzen. However, Nebraska’s new assistants, Kayla Banwarth and Tyler Hildebrand, are coming from quick-tempo systems, and with new options at all three pin-hitting positions, head coach John Cook said, now is the time to give the faster offense another shot.

Saturday, expect the Huskers to play senior Annika Albrecht and junior Olivia Boender at outside hitter. Junior Mikaela Foecke, who has played outside for most of the past two seasons, will play opposite hitter, where she spent the first month of her college career, and play in all six rotations after previously being limited to the front row.

“Anni has a super-fast arm, as fast as anybody we’ve had,” Cook said. “By going faster in your attack it allows her to use her arm as a weapon. It speeds up her arm instead of slowing it down.”
