NM11046
I'm currently travelling for business, and had breakfast with a business colleague who mentioned that he played college ball at FSU. We started to compare years and teams etc and he was the back up kicker during the years prior to our national champships. He said that Bowden respected TO a great deal (no surprise) and gave a couple examples. One being, the year after they beat us in the orange bowl, TO asked for some tips on how to get kicking teams moving faster, and how to improve speed (because at that time we cold recruit big, lineman but had issues getting skill players with speed), so Bowden sent a couple guys up to Lincoln for a week during the summer to share some tips and pointers. Also, that when Bowden was recruiting that if a player was from FL and wanting to go away to school, or if they were full on a position and he had a good candidate he would always suggest to the recruit to look seriously at NE. That it was a good program, solid coaching - if they were a fit for FSU they'd be a fit likely in LIncoln as well. When asked why he did it, he claimed he liked Osborne, and also that it was always a benefit to get those strong players out of his conference. Last thing he wanted to do was help out Spurrier and others in his area, and he didn't want to gift a program like OK a gifted athlete. Loved to hear that about my team and our reputation off the field. 6 Quote Link to comment
knapplc
Nebraska had an amazing run in the 1990s, but Florida State's was almost as good. Some circles will tell you theirs was a better decade. It was Bowden's teams and the Miami fiascos, combined with (and including) the seven straight bowl losses, that convinced Osborne he had to change a few things within his program. Landlord
No joke, their decade was close to equally as insane and dominant, with two national championships and finishing in the top 5 every single year. Quote Link to comment
MyBloodIsRed16
But he was recruiting Florida. And they played us in Florida... any more excuses I can throw out to make us look better? Quote Link to comment
dvdcrr
They were definitely game, but with the called back punt return, fumbled gift touchdown, and missed kick, they were very lucky to beat us in 93. Even Bowden admitted they were probably outplayed and outcoached. Quote Link to comment
NM11046
Yeah this kid said all he could remember was sweating bullets thinking he was going to lose the game for them on a kick in 93'. Didnt go so far as to say we should have won, but Ill wear him down this week til he does. Also w/a CU guy and been pestering him about McCarthy and that team (was it Sal Anunsay)? 1 Quote Link to comment

The only reason it took the FSU and Miami fiascos combined with the seven straight bowl losses because Osborne didn't have access to chat boards. Otherwise he'd have been able to clean up things a lot quicker. 2 Quote Link to comment
