Preview 2017: Nebraska Needs To Be Better Than Nine Wins

A blueblood superpower of a program, isn’t it time for Nebraska to be a super power again?

Nebraska, enough with being fine. Enough with being okay. Enough with settling for nine-wins and a swag bag.

It’s time to be mean. It’s time for t-shirts that have the word Championship on them. It’s time to unleash that entitled jerkweed streak that fan bases at superpower programs are known for. It’s time to shake this thing up and demand greatness.

It’s time to bust out of its state of perpetual above-averageness, and it’s time to expect Nebraska to be a superpower again

Preview 2017: What You Need To Know

The Nebraska Season Will Be A Success If …

The Huskers are still in the Big Ten title hunt on November 24th. Wining nine games last year was nice in a bounce back sort of way. but Nebraska – as a program – is supposed to be in the thick of the College Football Playoff chase every year, and it’s just not.

If Nebraska is good again, it’s supposed to win at Oregon. It’s supposed to take advantage of getting Wisconsin and Ohio State at home, and it’s supposed to be good enough to be knee-deep in the Big Ten hunt throughout the season. Getting to double-digit wins is a must to show that the program is improving, and that means also being relevant in late November.

Key Game To The Nebraska Season

Oct. 7 vs. Wisconsin – Iowa is fine, Northwestern is plucky, and Minnesota will be dangerous, but if Nebraska wants to win the West, it has to beat the Badgers in Lincoln. After playing Rutgers and Illinois, the Huskers should start out the Big Ten season strong, but after Bucky comes Ohio State, and then a run of three road games in four dates before facing Iowa. One of those away games? At Penn State.

2016 Nebraska Fun Stats

– Fumbles: Nebraska 16 (lost 5) – Opponents 10 (lost 3)

– Sacks: Nebraska 26 for 173 yards – Opponents 15 for 135 yards

– Time of Possession: Nebraska 32:10 – Opponents 27:50

Preview 2017: Nebraska Schedule Analysis

Realistic Best Case Scenario

The Huskers own a manageable September, getting by Willie Taggart’s Oregon team in Eugene for a 5-0 start before taking over the West with a win over Wisconsin. At the very least, they split the home dates with the Badgers and Ohio State before getting a week off to recharge. Even with three road games in the next four dates, they don’t have too many problems with Purdue, Northwestern and Minnesota, and split the Penn State and Iowa games for a 10-2 record and a trip to the Big Ten Championship.

Realistic Worst Case Scenario

They lose to Oregon and blow both home games against Wisconsin and Ohio State for an ugly 4-3 start. The week off doesn’t matter, getting stunned by Purdue on the road and losing both road games to Minnesota and Penn State. In a short Thanksgiving week, the Huskers lose to Iowa for a nightmare 5-7 season. Realistically, they’ll be too good for that, though. 6-6 is probably the worst possible run – and would lead to the start of the Scott Frost era.

The gist of the article: "It'll be fine."

Best quote in the article:

Bo Pelini hit the nine-win mark in four of his seven seasons at the helm, and ten in the other three, but because he looked and occasionally came across like a guy who might eventually put Steve Buscemi in a wood chipper, and his defenses couldn’t figure out Wisconsin, he was launched.

My lists:

Best Offensive Players:

1 - Stanley Morgan

2 - Tanner Lee

3 - Bryant

4 - DPE

5 - POB

Best Defensive Players:

1 - Chris Jones

2 - Carlos Davis

3 - Josh Kalu

4 - Young

5 - Khalil Davis

PS....I think these lists will be very different by mid season.

I honestly think the left side of our line belongs on the top OP.

I also think you're right about the D list changing by mid season. I think it's a lot of speculation until we see the 3-4 in action. It sounds like we have corners we feel like we can leave in 1v1 situations in the secondary though which I like.

I could see that as part of the changes by mid season.

Yeah, I called my shot on this back in 2014, proof. :B)
