Wonder Woman *Eventual Spoilers*

Recommended Posts

Did a quick search and did not find a thread for the movie opening next Friday. So what are your thoughts on the movie? Are you excited? Interested?

What are your thoughts on Alamo Drafthouse having a women's only screening? Also what are your thoughts about the backlash of this fact? A lot of people are whining about this fact, and a lot of the backlash comes from men with the argument being the denial of service to gays by bakery's. I've also seen one guy go ahead and purchase a ticket for the screening. My thoughts, its false equivalency on the denial of service because there are other times the movie is being shown on the same day. I want to avoid calling the people babies, but get over it. World would be a better place if we did not make a mountain out of a molehill on these types of situations.

Good topic!

I'm not a huge superhero fan, and rarely go to to movies anymore, BUT I love that this movie was made for and by strong women and that they're having a showing for girls and women. Like you said - plenty of other showings that day so it's an issue that shouldn't be one.

BUT I can step back and say that if Gladiator had been opened for just men I'd have thrown a fit. The one thing to keep in mind is the lack of strong womens' role and absolute lack of female superheros ever. It's good for girls, boys and adults alike to see this.

If someone has a problem with it the better thing to do would be to buy a ticket - protest by NOT giving the theatre your money.

And let's be honest - why do men want to see this film?

Hollywood and filmmaking is still a huge boys club. Throwing a fit that one theater is having one screening of one movie for women only is pretty f'ing ridiculous when you consider how male-centric the movie industry is in general.

That said, I don't imagine the movie will be that good.

I'd care about the screening (no matter how many theaters its happening at) if the movie was only showing once and only once. Its not and I find the response by some people petty and Alamo's response to the backlash hilarious.

But to NM's post about an all-male showing of Gladiator, superhero movies, like Hollywood in general, have been men only minus Black Widow and then Scarlet Witch. This is the first superhero movie with a female lead. Its a step forward. Gladiator was another big budget movie that, while good, doesn't have the same gravitas in regards to social commentary. I'm a laid back guy with these issues, as stated before, this female only showing doesn't bother me and an all male showing of Gladiator wouldn't have bothered me either. Its more that I do not care how a person runs their business as long as there's no discrimination (which there is none in this case).

I'm interested in the movie because I'm a big fan of DC. I'm interested if they have can correct the direction of their universe because I like the characters more than Marvel's. Gal Gadot was one of the better parts of BvS, so I'm hopeful that this movie can be enjoyable (early reviews are better than BvS).

I'm not interested in the movie and I would never attend an all women event.

That said it's laughable that anyone is upset by this. In fact I find it unlikely anyone is actually upset; they're just pretending. Anyone who is "upset" is likely also someone who thinks sexism (against women) doesn't really exist. They're also likely the same type of people as those who don't understand why there isn't White history month.

NM - you ask why men want to see it. My fiance wants to see it and I'm not sure why so I guess I'll ask him tomorrow. He rarely ever watches movies at all so maybe he really liked the TV show.

I think he may be alluding to the "hot chick" factor, but imo she's more beautiful than hot and I want to watch it for the strong female lead and really hope it doesn't suck like other female super hero movies did (catwoman, Elektra, etc). Like someone else said, she was one of the better parts of BVS and I actually hope Chris Pine's awful self doesn't ruin it.

Boy have I said that a million times on here, thank you!

Also, I bet Alamo is just a more than a bit happy about the "outrage" it only helps them.

Oh...and your fiance wants to see it because for a lot of guys (not me) this is superhero porn.

Moraine - curious ... why would you never attend an all woman event?

Let me start by saying I have zero problem with the all female showing (or "ladies night"). But my wife and I were talking about how it was upsetting some people for whatever reason and the conversation evolved.

The point of events like the all girl showing or "ladies night" is to promote the movie/business. We started to talk about what is okay to do as long as it is trying to promote a business.

For example: a bar has a Tuesday Night Ladies Night where women either get in free or get half priced drinks. This is done to try to get women into the bar during the middle of the week and the men don't complain: duh. But we started talking, what if a bar wanted to increase the number of black people into the bar (to promote neighborhood diversity, a good thing)? Would it be okay for them to give free entry or drink discounts because of skin color? What if they were trying to push out a population by promoting another?

Neither one of us had a point we were trying to make, just raised some interesting talking points...

I don't mind hanging out with a group of all women friends that I'm close to but I'm not usually interested in the things that (in my experience) large groups of women talk about.

Makes sense - as a general rule I find it tough to be around a lot of women. We are terrible to each other. Just wondered your rationale.

Wonder Woman raked in $100.5 million

Taking the wife to it on Tuesday since my local theater has deals on Tuesday's. Pretty excited about this movie.

So far both Wonder Woman and The Dark Knight are the highest rated superhero movies at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes
