Fearing What Didn't Happen

Recommended Posts

What Husker event have you been concerned about, but did not occur. For me it was the Orange bowl after the 1994 season. The Huskers score to take a 7 point lead with approximately 3 minutes left in the game. Even though Miami had no first downs in the 4th quarter, I just knew that Miami would score the last TD and go for two as the ultimate disappointment for all Husker fans. Instead the Husker D nearly killed Costa on the last series. Below is link to one of the most satisfying Husker plays of all time.

I turned off the 1997 Missouri game because there was NO WAY we were going to drive down the field and score a TD with less than a minute on the clock. I knew we were going to lose that game and I didn't want to watch. So I missed the first two or three plays of that drive, and I think we were across midfield when I turned it back on.

When Davison caught the TD I was jumping up and down in my living room so much that I knocked over a bookshelf.

So funny you say that - I flipped out too and ended up breaking a glass coffee table. Big mess, and huge leg bruise.

Here's the last defensive stand from the 1994 season (1995 Orange Bowl). Notice how our guys are fresh and ready to go, and how whupped Miami is. If you watch the whole video you can see Miami's D Line is gasping, while our O Line is peppy and ready for more.

That was vintage Tom Osborne football. We pounded their lines on both sides of the ball, all game long, and when the 4th quarter came around they were just gassed. It was, at the time, the most frustrating and eventually satisfying game I had ever watched.

I was at that one - loved watching Sapp call for oxygen tanks to be rolled out to him during tv time outs.

This isn't football-related, but I've been following the volleyball team for decades, and there was some concern that Cook was getting... not really past his prime, but just not as interested in the grind anymore. Everyone burns out, and after the 2014 season when Nebraska VERY uncharacteristically went 24-10, I was concerned that Cook was ready to move on.

Then in that offseason, four players transferred. Kira Larson, Maddie Haggerty, Alexa Etheridge & Melanie Kiel all left the program in about a month, and the upcoming season looked like it was going to be grim. Cook was uncharacteristically blunt in the preseason banquet, basically saying that volleyball at this level wasn't for everyone. I wondered if that was self-referential.

Then, of course, the Huskers rolled in the 2015 season, and even the back-to-back losses to Wisconsin & Minnesota didn't seem that concerning. They cruised through the NCAA tournament, dropped a game to Kansas in the Final Four and then swept Texas in the Finals and won the Championship.

So yeah, that was an unfounded fear.
