Nebrasketball Tournament: Collier vs. Sadler vs. Miles

Recommended Posts

Nebraska basketball hasn’t had a lot of tournament success in its history, particularly since Danny Nee was fired after the 1999-2000 season. The Huskers have made one NCAA Tournament appearance, falling unceremoniously to Baylor in 2014. They’ve gone 3-5 in the NIT – including three straight losses – and are 9-17 in conference tournament games during that span. The tournament format has not been kind to Nebraska.

We’re changing that today. The Huskers are going to get a tournament victory because we’re pitting them against themselves, creating a hypothetical round-robin tourney that features the best collective teams from the Barry Collier, Doc Sadler and Tim Miles eras.

This doesn’t necessarily mean the five best players. We need guys whose games mesh, who fit together and would be effective on the court. For instance, Bo Spencer had a nice scoring season during his one year at NU in 2011-12. But as a point guard who passed about as often as Kye Kurkowski played, is he really the guy you want running Sadler’s offense?

We’re dividing up the players based on the coach they spent the majority of their career playing for. So while Shavon Shields was recruited by and committed to Sadler, he’s eligible only for Miles’ team. The same goes for guys like Charles Richardson Jr., who played his senior season under Sadler but spent most of his career under Collier.
