Well aside from Pelini we hated all of them.  We hated Bo later.

I think it has more to do with the decisions that are made during the game. Most people on the board know what it takes to win football games.  When you do stupid things and call plays that have no chance for success people call out the coordinators.  Fundlemental football  is not all that difficult to understand and when coaches making huge amounts of money can't run out the clock,  pass when the need to run,  use time outs when the need to and cost the team a win by doing so need to be called out.  Not a personal thing,  its call accountability.

I said largely, not entirely.  The OU game that year started pretty rough, too.  But that defense flipped a switch down the stretch and were pretty tough by the time they faced Clemson in Jacksonville.

I'll take Husker Fan trivia for $1000, Alec.

Without getting help from Bowden and crew he might have continued to be hated.  Fans can be irrational but they aren't all stupid.    When they see the same thing over and over (in this case getting killed in bowl games year after year) with no changes from people that are making huge sums of money then some hate is probably justified.  Fans knew there was a problem and felt McBride wasn't solving it.  Turns out the solution was out there.

I don't think they were making huge sums of money though. Anybody know what the Husker coaches were making in the 80's and early 90's?

I'd like to have seen him stay on for a couple of more years in the B1G.  I was curious if he could have made adjustments to avoid some of the blowout losses.

No. But anything before 2000 was vastly different due to TV money. If I remember correctly, and I may not, Spurrier made 1 million as the highest paid coach that year.
