What did we learn? (Game 6 - Wisconsin)

Recommended Posts

VectorVictor    1,559

Today I learned:

  • The Nebraska blueprint for football still works and is a winning formula.
  • That Langsdorf needs to be fired ASAP for this season to be salvageable. His second-half playcalling was atrocious, and he went away from the run and had Lee chuck the ball around. What's that stat about when Nebraska passes 40+ times?
    • Our WRs failed to help Lee out. Yes, Wisky was physical, but that means our WRs need to step their game up.
    • Lee actually improved. That Pick 6 was really on Langsdorf  and his craptacular playcalling in the red zone, and Lee didn't make mistakes that hurt us otherwise.
  • Yes, our defense didn't step up in the second half. But AT LEAST 50% of the blame is because the offense fell on its face in the second half and our defense was left on the field for WAY too long.
  • We have the best fans, bar none. That stadium looked and sounded EXCELLENT! Too bad Riley and 'DORF couldn't help put a product on the field worthy of the fans' effort.

We didn't play Rutgers or Illinois tonight.  Wisconsin is a real "powerful" team.

They have done exactly what they have always done against us as of late... run it right down our throats!

Wisconsin plays a physical style of football we once did ourselves.

I learned we are getting better in some areas but we got exposed in others

No moral victory here. We played better at times but again, inconsistent.

I think this team has talent but youth and inexperience combined with subpar coaching leads to inconsistent play. I think we get a winning season still, but it won't be enough to save Riley. Luckily if we can get the right guy and keep the recruiting class intact I think we could be pretty solid next year, we have young talent.

My buddy at work who is an Oregon fan could not believe that we hired Riley in the first place. I learned that Riley is now a marked man for proving three years in a row he will always be a career .500 coach and lose the games that actually matter. It's time to turn the page in Husker football.

Figured Diaco would be busy with other things, like figuring out how to keep tOSU from hanging 100 on us? :dunno

Our tackling is pathetic. Kalu just dives at the running back hoping to tackle him. On the offensive side, the receivers need to step up and make plays for Lee. The receivers have problems with drops, and fumbles.

I learned that I felt like if I squinted it was 1989 Nebraska finishing a conference game off leaning on the offensive line and running backs.

I learned that I really miss watching an offensive line just dominate a fourth quarter.

I learned that I am numb to 3 TD losses, and that shouldn't be that way.

If Northern Illinois was the beginning of the end for the Mike Riley era at Nebraska then...

...tonight Wisconsin's running game put the nail in the coffin.

He'll finish out the season, but the Riley era is over.

It's time to right this Nebraska ship.

It's time to get back to TOUGH, PHYSICAL, POWER FOOTBALL.

It still works...see Wisconsin.

Wisconsin rushed for over 350 yards in Nebraska's own house, all without using the option. It was ALL POWER FOOTBALL.

I learned that this staff needs to be fired. It's bad enough to lose. Being physically and mentally dominated by a tougher and better coached team is inexcusable. Time to move on.

We out recruit everyone in the B1G, but PSU, OSU and UM.  You wouldnt know it.

Riley was a bad hire then and a worse hire now.

This staff can't develop talent.

Catchy phrases ie #savagegorillas and #moneyteam don't matter when you can't develop the talent.

The system we need just beat our a$$ unconscious.  If this had been a fight, it would've been called.

Riley and Company can't be gone quick enough.

Caleb has a leg.

I was wrong to think Diaco was good and our D was improving.

Just because we can't beat a 3-4, doesn't mean our 3-4 will beat yours.

We look worse in year 3 with his guys than year one.

The team did have moments of awesomeness.  I feel bad they are saddled with .500 coaches.

I didn’t learn anything that hasn’t been evident for the last 20 years.

Im done with these coaches. Don’t care how they go, just hope it’s sooner rather than later. They perpetuate the soft attitude that prevents the players from giving a s#!t about losing. It’s a bad, soft football team. They don’t deserve the fan support they get.

I need to see psychologist so I can quit caring how they do. I hate watching this team suck.

I also learned that Nebraska fans and Memorial Stadium is still a different beast at night.

Even though we lost, kudos to the fans who went to the game tonight. Great energy in the stadium for 3 plus quarters.

I'm not even watching the game next weekend. I don't support this staff. What a way to honor the 97 team. "Hey guys, remember that thing you guys did, and your predecessors did. You know, that power-running, run the ball down their throats while they simply just took it style of offense?...Come watch Wisconsin embarrass your alma mater by doing just that!"

Langs is a joke and Mike Riley is the reason he's here in the first place. Bring on Scott Frost!

Nebraska isn't a good team, and we aren't getting better under Riley.

I thought our offense showed some improvement tonight.  Tanner was better.  Ziggy ran hard.  The line still stinks.  Especially the right side.  Our receiver corp still stinks too.

Tanner may have "looked better" but his numbers were terrible. 50% passing, 1 pick 6, only 1 TD.

Do you think that has something to do with receivers who can't get open.  Also, how many times did Tanner have to dodge the outside linebacker on our right side?

i learned our d-line has horrible reaction times. whoever was on the left side wouldnt move until 2-3 seconds after the ball was snapped.

I agree that it's not all Lee's fault. So the whole offense pretty much sucks. That is on Riley and his assistants.

The defense looked much better most of the game, then they ran out of steam. The offense is the same hit and miss squad with no direction and bad play calling. I learned we may be a game better than my prediction....maybe two??

When do we finally look at the players?  As much as people around here love Stanley, he's not a good receiver and will not be drafted.  Otherwise, we have a lacrosse player and a guy who hasn't been good since he was a freshman.  Then there's Hoppes....

I mean at least you're honest, but it's kind of silly to me that you think you being a fan has any impact on the team's performance. I'd wager that 100% of them have no idea who you are.

He drops WAAAAAAYYYY too many balls to be paid to do that exact job.  Sorry to those that think so, but he won't sniff the NFL if that isn't fixed.

We desperately need d-line depth, and athleticism at linebacker. It's embarrassing how many times in a row they were able to run it.

Lee was a lot better, although the stats aren't incredible. The line did a pretty good job protecting him. Completely different ball game if Ozigbo doesn't let it bounce off his helmet and DPE catches the touchdown. I think we would've still worn down and probably lost, but a lot closer.

To everyone talking about needing to go back to power football - that's all playcalling, we were running the same plays they were. They were just committed to the run and have a better line and backs. You can attribute that to coaching or recruiting, but our playbook is almost the same.

I learned that:

(1) Wisconsin’s recipe for success is what the 90s Huskers did

(2) This coach was, is, and will always be a .500 coach no matter what team you give him. You can give him Alabama and he will turn them to a .500 team

(3) Wisconsin’s running backs have always crushed us since we joined the big 10

(4) We will not go to a ball game this year

(5) Purdue will beat us

(6) There is no husker pride in this team

(7) I feel bad for our players because their coaches are letting them down by not preparing them well

(8) It does not take time for a coach to turn things around. A good coach can make things happen immediately. A half-ass coach is a half-ass coach

(9) If we do not make changes soon, we will become the Kansas of the big 10.

(10) We will not upset anyone because we are very predictable and whatever the media says about us is true no matter how hard it is for us to accept.

It would be extremely silly to think that. But I devote a lot of energy to Husker football every year, and diverting it elsewhere would probably be good for me. Has nothing to do with the impact it has on the team(although if enough people do the same, you betcha the university going to start feeling it in the pocketbooks)...

Agreed.  I also think he's too small.

I'm half tempted to start a new topic with this question:  Who on our team can start on theirs?  In my opinion, the only answer is Tanner.

I will out some blame on the players, but why haven't Coach DUI and the other coaches have been able to bring in better WR's.  For an offense so dependent on the passing game, the WR's are small and not very dynamic. Beck and the former golf coach got more out of those WR's.

So last week I made a comment in this type of thread about Riley wasn't coming back next year because of his body language. Some agreed, many disagreed, so I will keep with the trend. Based off Riley's body language, he isn't coming back next year. I think this because after a game, where we all know how it played out, he was laughs and smiles afterward. I interpreted this as a man who felt a weight lifted off his shoulders because he knows his fate, he knows the pressures and daily grind of this job are soon to be behind him. Otherwise, why in the world is a head coach all smiles and laughter after coaching and getting embarrassed in arguably his biggest game of his career? (A big game because it felt like there was so much riding on this game, be in simply Riley showing the team/program turned the corner, and also the team controlled their destiny in the West).

Disclaimer: I am not a Doctor.

Power football is beautiful.  We hate Wisky because they do to us what we use to do to people.  They are a success and we don't know who we are.

I really like our WR's.  I was surprised their CB's could play such tight coverage, and man-to-man.  Amazing.  I credit them.  Our WR's still drop way too many damn balls.

Ozigbo is a good #3 RB.

Thought we would lose be about 20 ... hey, even a blind squirrel gets one right twice a year.

Bend but don't break may work against bad teams but it gives up 353 yards rushing to good teams.

Jonathan Taylor averaged over seven yards per carry even if you EXCLUDE the 75 yard TD.

Hornibrook is terrible but he's still better than Lee (statistically).

Possibly.  The only thing I've been remotely happy with this season is our d-line play.  I think Parella has done a good job with them and those guys play their hearts out.

Fair enough. You're of course free to make your own decisions about the things you care about and pay attention to. It's my opinion that the amount of wins and losses is a stupid thing to base that decision off of.
