Exhibition victories over Iowa State and Mississippi State have put a smile on the face of Nebraska men’s basketball coach Tim Miles. The kenpom.com analytics site’s preseason projections list Iowa State at 34th, Mississippi State at 59th and Nebraska at 98th.“I think we competed well,’’ Miles said Monday. Miles praised juniors James Palmer, Glynn Watson and Jack McVeigh as steady forces in both contests.

The Husker staff is meeting this week to discuss redshirting true freshman wings Nana Akenten and Thor Thorbjarnarson. Akenten didn’t play in either exhibition, and Thorbjarnarson played less than a minute against Iowa State. “We’re already playing 10 or 11 guys,’’ Miles said. “It’s just hard to get a 12th guy in there.

“Nana has loads of talent, but has farther to go than the rest of the guys just in terms of team defense and acclimation and some ball-handling. He can shoot it and is as athletic as anybody. It’s a matter of time for him.’’ Miles said any redshirt discussion with a player is open-ended.
