Beyond the pale?

Mike Riley hasn't "done nothing." He's been here coaching every day since he was hired, doing the best he can.  He hasn't had the results you or he wanted, but that doesn't mean he hasn't been doing anything.

If absolutely nothing else, he has been an amazing ambassador of Nebraska football for three years, running this program with grace and class, so much so that after he was fired the new AD allowed him to stand at Nebraska's podium, wearing Nebraska's gear, and speak to the media unfettered.  Why?  Because Moos trusts that whatever Riley says, it will be to the benefit of the school that just fired him.

Think about how rare that is.  He wasn't marched out with security, he wasn't summarily dismissed on the tarmac, he was given just short of a hero's sendoff.

During his time here he cultivated relationships with high schools across the country, many of which we had no inroads with before Riley's arrival.  Doors are open now, thanks to Mike Riley, that we never had the opportunity to walk through before.

It is beyond the pale to accuse that man, whose only fault was not to win enough games, of taking money he didn't earn.

If anything, Riley was underpaid.

Spot on Knapp. +1

His reputation of being a professional, was certainly true, unfortunately, so was his 500 record. It wasn’t for the lack of effort though!

Anyone else think this thread was going to be about Frost still not having a tan after living in FL for 2 years?

I've been living in Florida over 30 years.  I've never had a tan, well, except for the few days after I drove my new convertible around for a day (ouch, the skin burns).  But then my main hobby is tabletop gaming, which is done indoors, under AC.  The beach is too sandy. ;)

I would not call what he has been doing "coaching".  Now maybe "coaching" is what he was trying to do, but if so, he was failing miserably.

When you "coach" people, their skills generally improve, and the team improves.

So from 2014 until now has their really been any improvement creditable to him?  Any proof he actually improved anyone's skills?

Dude, this is like if a paint contractor drops a paint bomb on your roof from an airplane, and someone saying, yes they did paint your house, just not with the results you wanted, so pay up.

It's not crazy to think Riley might voluntarily offer a refund for being one of the worst coaches in program history. Riley is no Gary Anderson though. Anderson was at least honest admitting he couldn't get the job done whereas Riley stated he thought he could turn our program around after running it into the ground.

Gary Anderson is not a good man for what he did. Just giving up like that is not commendable. I think Riley was honest. He believes he can get the job done and that we were headed in the right direction. Riley isn't a quitter and has faith even when times are looking tough. That's commendable, he never gave up on this team even after he was fired.

If you talk to the players who he coached it seems like they feel he improved them as young men. That is something.

Dude, how do you go through the world with this attitude?  I'm just hoping that you're young and misunderstood on how the real world works.  This thread is delusional.

I would like to think Riley is honest but when he states that he thinks he is the right person to turn things around I wonder. What objective measurement could he cite that could possibly back up that claim? If I told you that I'm confident I'm going to win the lottery please tell me I'm an idiot and inform me of the odds. Don't admire me for having faith. Maybe not the best analogy.

Terrible analogy. Lottery is completely by chance. Having faith in your work is completely different. Things are typically the darkest or the worst right before you make it. It weeds out the people who don't really believe. Not saying Mike was going to have success here, but the point is if you do want to succeed that is the attitude to have. The attitude must be mixed with action and emotion. There is more to success than just faith that you will succeed. But you cannot succeed without faith that you will and that is a fact.

So what I was getting at, ( it obviously has been taken too literally) is the principle or idea that you shouldn't take money for doing nothing, and the point it would make to him if he were asked to give back.

Never once in all the negative s#!t I’ve heard said about Riley have I heard his work ethic questioned. He didn’t “do nothing”

Our previous AD looked at Riley’s Record and resume and said “ I gotta Get me some of that!!!” He then offered Riley an amount of money to provide those sweet results which Riley did with a smile. Riley fulfilled his contract.

Hey, dvdcrr, you know since you are a caring, understanding guy with lots of love for this state and all, how about you hand over some of YOUR money to this honest, hard working single parent?  I mean, I have kids that I have to send to before school care and your dough could really make a difference. Now, I know you don’t owe me anything contractually. But given what that money could mean for me and my children, I thought I should ask.
