Can someone enlighten me how these salaries are decided? In particular, what makes Austin or Dewitt’s pay much higher than a Held or Fisher? Are their positions typically higher paid? Fisher is making less than Donte made, so no?

Just curious. Thanks.

Well Frost is given a pool (I think his was 5 million) works with the coaches/AD. With the differences in pay imagine is a combo of things, experience I imagine is a big factor in that. Dewitt also holds two hats coaching both outside lb’s and is the special teams coordinator (he’s also a certified genius) plus 16 years + coaching experience, Austin has 7+ years (NFL and Division 1)... Ryan Held was probably happy with the pay raise he got and besides his time as a GA with Nebraska and Tennessee, UCF was his first major college football coaching experience....Travis Fisher also has limited experience at the division one level, though he did play in the NFL(9 seasons), UCF was also his first step into coaching major college football.

Now on the subject of Donte, he was paid a larger amount due to his recruiting abilities and the fact he was leaving a job to join an unknown. I believe guys like Held quickly followed Coach Frost because not only was it a major step up (and in Held’s case his alma mater), but they believe in what Frost is selling. Plus besides Fisher and Walters who both had pretty lucrative NFL careers this is more money then any of these guys have ever made. Plus if you look at Fisher, Held and Duvall all had the largest pay raises percentage wise.

DeWitt, meanwhile, has a really interesting coaching bio. He was the one who was hired to take over the defensive coordinator duties at Northern Iowa in 2009 for Frost after Frost was hired by Oregon. DeWitt was then hired at Florida Atlantic as the linebackers coach in 2012 by ... wait for it ... Carl Pelini.

Interesting story there in Boca Raton: After Pelini and the defensive coordinator resigned in-season in 2013, DeWitt became the interim DC and the team finished with a 4-0 record and ranked as the No. 11 defense in the country. DeWitt's work was so impressive that the next FAU coach Charlie Partridge retained DeWitt as the DC, calling the decision "a no-brainer."

But DeWitt ultimately chose to move on and take a job in West Point with Army for two years before Frost hired him at UCF in 2016, also giving him the title of associate head coach for the Knights.

The trust Frost has in DeWitt seems clear. Not only does DeWitt coach the outside backers, but he's also in charge of special teams, where his return units excelled in 2017. He's also one of the most important staff members when it comes to the Huskers recruiting Florida.
