***Miles said the team held a light practice on Monday coming off a very physical game at Michigan State and then another just-as-physical test against Minnesota on Tuesday night.

***Miles said Minnesota’s starting frontcourt was as good as any team they would see this season with potential All-American Jordan Murphy and the nation’s leading shot blocker, Reggie Lynch.

***Miles said the most significant adjustment he’s team is dealing with right now is the difference in physicality allowed by officials in Big Ten play. He said that’s something all of his players are going to have to adjust to, but especially the centers, Jordy Tshimanga, Duby Okeke, and Tanner Borchardt.

“We’re not getting enough out of our centers right now,” Miles said. “We just need to be better.”

***Miles said sophomore center Isaiah Roby is coming back off of his sprained ankle injury well. Not only did he play extended minutes in the second half vs. Michigan State, he came back on Monday and had an excellent practice.

The Gophers kicked off the Big Ten conference season* on Sunday with a dominant win over Rutgers. Is there a better team to ease into the conference season against than the Scarlet Knights? In a year where Big Ten teams are being forced to play two conference games in early December so Jim Delaney can pretend like people on the East Coast care about Midwest basketball, the Gophers lucked out with a pair of games against two of the worst teams in the conference. And in a time of the season where coaches are still figuring out their lineups and shaking off the rust, not having to face Michigan State or Maryland this early is fortuitous.

The fun continues against the Nebraska Cornhuskers, who are predicted to finish near the bottom of the conference again this year. Things haven’t been going well in Whoville recently and this year doesn’t promise to be any better. All-conference forward Tai Webster is gone and there really isn’t a good replacement ready to fill the spot. Even with Webster the Huskers had fallen on hard times and their miraculous run to the NCAA Tournament in 2014 seems like a decade ago.

So far this year they’re 6-3 with losses to St. John’s, UCF and Michigan State, who wrecked them by 29 points in the conference opener on Sunday.

THREE-POINTERS

1. Tuesday is Stripe the Vault night at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Adidas is providing extra-large shirts on every seat at PBA, with sections alternating between red and white shirts. Fans who want to wear their own shirt to the game, can go to go.unl.edu/stripethevault to see what color their section is.

2. Nebraska continues to search for production from its centers, who struggled mightily against Michigan State. Starter Jordy Tshimanga and backup Duby Okeke combined to go 1-for-8 from the field for four points, four rebounds and nine fouls. Tshimanga fouled out in just 10 minutes of play.

"They're getting the ball in pretty good shape. It might be some confidence, but I don't have a good remedy right now other than get better position; get deeper position, find an easy way to score," Miles said. "But at the same time, you've got to make a play."

3. Miles said sophomore forward Isaiah Roby came through the Michigan State game in good shape in his first action since spraining his ankle. Roby had seven points and six rebounds in 23 minutes against the Spartans, the most minutes for any of Nebraska's bench players.

The 12th-ranked Minnesota men's basketball team continues Big Ten Conference play on the road Tuesday at Nebraska. The Gophers and Cornhuskers are meeting as part of the adjusted conference schedule this season in which two December games will be played in order to accommodate the one week earlier Big Ten Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

• On Sunday, the Gophers snapped a four-game losing streak in B1G openers, winning its first since a 76-63 victory against Michigan State on Dec. 31, 2012. Last season, the Gophers dropped a 75-74 overtime decision versus the Spartans, and had previously lost conference-opening tilts at Ohio State, at Purdue during 2014-15, and at home versus Michigan. Since 1980-81, the Gophers are 12-20 in Big Ten openers (excluding vacated seasons).

Jordan Murphy is leading the team and the Big Ten Conference averaging 21.0 points and 12.9 rebounds per game through the first nine games. Murphy has posted nine double-doubles (highest in the country) thus far this season, and the three-time Big Ten Player of the Week became the first Gopher to win the award in back-to-back weeks. Murphy is also just the second Gopher to win it three times in the same season. He is additionally second in rebounds and offensive rebounds (5.3) per game. His 21.0 points per game ranks 37th, as of Dec. 4.

Reggie Lynch leads the country with 4.8 blocks per game, and Sunday, Lynch moved past Jeff Hagen (2002-05) and is now tied with Michael Bauer (2000-04) for sixth on the Gophers' all-time blocked shots list with 157.

• Head coach Richard Pitino won his 100th career game on Nov. 25 against Alabama. Pitino is one of five active Division I head coaches who have reached the 100 career victory mark in their sixth season or sooner.
