I understand how well NU replaces talent, but let's not overlook how special of a player that Hunter was. The best setter in the country, and one of the best in the program history isn't easy to replace. Quote Link to comment

Unless I am missing another coach, John Cook has more national titles than any other coach in Husker history. Francis Allen coached the Skers to eight NCAA National Championship titles. But Atherton doesn't need to be great, just good, and she entered the program as one of the best setters in the country two years ago. She was not at her best in the VERT Challenge this year, but another year of practice, this time running the show with the 1's, should have her good enough to be a competent replacement for Hunter. 2 Quote Link to comment

I also think with the way Cook has emphasized the receive and pass game, they help make the Setter's job easier. In the 1st 2 sets last night, it was amazing how little Hunter had to run to make the set. She did a fantastic job picking the right hitter to set, but her job was made easier last night. The one set they lost, they slacked a bit on their receive and pass game and Hunter had to run a lot to get to the ball to make the set limiting her options. Just another way Cook is ahead of his peers. 1 Quote Link to comment

But when she had to run all over the court tracking down bad passes, well, you saw what that did for Florida. Volleyball pretty much takes a solid effort in all areas but nothing will shut down your offense faster than bad passing. Not to take anything away from Hunter because she has been amazing but her replacement will do just fine if they continue to pass as well as they have. Quote Link to comment

Yep, plus we have one of the best setters in the country committed to us in Niklin Hames. She will be here this summer working with the team. Between Atherton and her, we will be fine IMO. 2 Quote Link to comment

As you said, not trying to take ANYTHING away from Hunter. She's an All-American with two national titles. That doesn't happen by accident. But we had to recover from the loss of Christy Johnson. Which went OK until we had to recover from the loss of Fiana Nepo. So we stumbled along with Greichaly Cepero for awhile. We made due with Dani Busboom, Sydney Anderson and Lauren Cook for a few years. Then Mary Pollmiller got us through to Hunter. All of them got us to a regional final. All but Pollmiller won a conference title. Atherton will have Foecke, Sweet and Stivrins swinging away and Maloney helping as well. I think Cook will be able to put something together. 1 Quote Link to comment
