A lot of people believe that wearing knee pads also help keep other players from getting concussions due to the impact being softened instead of getting a bare knee to the side of the helmet

I would definitely have to disagree on that.  Unless they are going to change the rule on required thickness of the knee pad.

Yet boxers still get knocked out with thick gloves and head gear..  I also played the game and didn't like to wear thick knee pads.  In my experience it was the size of the leg the knee was attached to that accounted more for the likelihood of you getting concussed.  Not the size of the knee pad
