Spring Football Games cancelled around the Midwest

As we found out in 2012, Spring is a pretty volatile time weather-wise to hold a football game. For the first time in the 50-year history of the Nebraska Spring Game, the event had to be cancelled when severe weather rolled through the area.  But that was at game time, assessing current conditions, which makes these decisions, made days in advance, all the more odd.

Wisconsin cancels spring football game due to threat of inclement weather

The University of Wisconsin has canceled its spring football game due to the threat of inclement weather. The game was set for 6 p.m. Friday at Camp Randall Stadium and won't be rescheduled.

"The safety of our student-athletes and fans is our utmost priority," UW athletic director Barry Alvarez said in a release. "We thought it was best to make the call early to give the numerous groups involved in the game, including our team, our fans, our media partners and staff, notice of the cancellation as soon as possible."

With the forecast calling for a strong chance of heavy rain and thunderstorms, the Badgers will hold an indoor practice at the McClain Center on Friday that won't be open to the public.

Fans who already purchased tickets to the game will receive a full refund.

The Badger Sports Kids' Fair, which was scheduled to take place in the McClain Center from 4:30-6 p.m., is also canceled.

Michigan cancels spring game due to weather concerns

Michigan has canceled its spring football game Saturday at Michigan because of a severe weather threat.

The forecast projects considerable rain and thunderstorms which is why on Wednesday Michigan decided to cancel. Wisconsin also canceled its Friday night spring game for similar concerns.

“We want to ensure the safety of our fans as well as the student-athletes and staff,” Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said in a release Wednesday. “We also wanted to provide as much notice in advance for fans and the families of our players that were considering attending.”

The game will not be rescheduled because of the limited number of spring practices remaining — Michigan will have practices April 16, 18, 21, 24 — and finals begin soon

“We are disappointed for our fans and players’ families that this opportunity to see our team compete at Michigan Stadium will not be possible due to weather concerns,” Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said in the release. “We made a decision that was in the best interest of our fans, student-athletes and volunteer staff needed to organize this event.”

Iowa State cancels spring game due to poor weather conditions

AMES, Ia. — Iowa State football fans hoping to get a sneak peek at the 2018 Cyclones will have to wait.

Bue to poor weather conditions forecasted for Saturday, the 2018 Iowa State spring game has been canceled and will not be made up.

"The only thing you feel bad for is our fan base because you love the opportunity for our kids to get out," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said following Monday's practice. "Our fans have been so awesome to us the last two years, in terms of showing up and have been such a huge, huge piece of why that's been such a positive event."

The annual event had been scheduled to take place Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium. But with cold temperatures and a high chance of rain projected in the forecast that day, Iowa State decided to call off the game. Iowa State director of athletics Jamie Pollard said in a statement issued by the school Tuesday that it was a mutual decision made by him and Campbell.

Despite not wanting to disappoint fans, Campbell said the decision not to have his players take the field at Jack Trice Stadium was an easy one. Instead, Iowa State will hold its third scrimmage of the spring inside at the Bergstrom Football Complex.

2018 Gold-Blue Spring Game Cancelled

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Due to impending wintry weather being forecast for the Morgantown area on Saturday, April 7, the 2018 Gold-Blue Spring Football Game has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

Tickets sold to fans in advance of the spring game will be automatically refunded by the Mountaineer Ticket Office if paid by credit card or check. Fans who paid cash should contact the Mountaineer Ticket Office at 1-800-WVU GAME to initiate their refund process.

"Fan and player safety have to take priority. When you have snow predicted for much of the state on Saturday, we need to take the utmost caution to assure the safety of our student-athletes, while also avoiding elements that are problematic for our fans," Director of Athletics Shane Lyons said. "You would expect to not have to worry about snow accumulation in April, but that's the forecast. After much consideration, we made this decision for the safety of all involved."

Would the weather even matter for our game?  With all the excitement in Frost's first year, Memorial Stadium would be chock full even if there was a foot of snow on the ground, tornado warnings, and a hail storm blowing in.  LOL :)
