Post-Practice Presser - August 20

Recommended Posts

The continuing theme this fall is the increase in depth all over the field, but particularly on defense.  Its been about 20 years since we have had legitimate backups all across the roster to keep fresh legs in the game.

That added depth looks great on paper but I have a little different take.  If a bunch of freshmen are looking that good it likely means we don't have any superstars at any of these spots.   Hopefully I'm wrong...

Might be why we fired the past staff...

If things are going well in recruiting, I think it’s normal for freshmen to look good right away. That said, it does sound like a bit of talking out of both sides of the mouth when they also mention DBs missing too many tackles.

Only thing to do right now is to see the glass as half full with a staff that has an actual road map to success. I'm not worried at all about playing several freshmen that will occasionally miss their assignment this season. I'm hoping to set things up for 2019 and 2020.

That, and also if we can fix our fundamentals on defense it could look like a night and day different defense, period. I'm glad to hear the coaches calling out missed tackles in the secondary.

You can do good things and bad things at the same time...

When everyone does their job, there won't be any tackles for the DB's to have to make on the back end.  Or maybe he's talking about the DB's making the offense miss so many tackles after interceptions!  I'm full on drunk on kool-aid!

Look, I get it, guy. Things are looking promising.

We had a preseason discussion last year on whether or not Diaco would get us in the top 10 or simply just the top 25 defensively. We were so beyond thrilled to move on from Banker and get a real DC, and there was all this exciting talk about the aggressive wrinkles he was using in practice.

Then the season happened and we blamed everything on Diaco and pretended like we wanted to keep Banker. I would never blame anyone for being optimistic in the preseason, things look promising. But yeah, I have a really hard time believing we are now so flush with depth, especially at corner. And when I hear that they’re still struggling with tackling, I have an even harder time buying it.

All of that and you somehow still missed the point.

I don't know if this is just a Year 1 strategy or if it will the modus operandi going forward. But it appears that, as far as "keeping cards close to the vest" is concerned, these guys are in Bill Bellichick territory. I don't envy the sports media in Nebraska, when it comes to Frost's regime.

Collin Miller: "We're actually rotating a lot, you know, 'cause our offense does a pretty good job of keeping the ball going. So they can go 3 & out pretty quick, so you gotta have fresh legs [on defense]."

Possibly true, but at the same time you have guys like Honas, Bell, and Tre Neal who we would have expected to easily separate from the crowd and they haven't.

While the coaches are reticent, if you listen when the players name names, they are more likely to be your Number 1s (called out first).

I think Dewitt has an Aerospace Engineering Degree and actually worked at NASA before getting back into coaching.  He is one smart dude

Mick Stoltenberg and Alex Davis are just plain frightening to look at.  Hoping to see the kind of football where our guys punish the opposition on every play, every block, every tackle, then help the opponent up and repeat on the next play, until it is clear the opposing players start to appear hesitant to engage.  I remember seeing plays where running backs would see Carlos Polk, or Grant Wistrom or Broderick Thomas in their path and more or less just go down like a QB slide rather than take them on.

I didn't know any of that, but it was obvious he's super smart just from the way he talks.

Dewitt: "My wife calls me the dumbest smart guy she knows because I could be sitting in a lab all day long wearing a white lab coat getting home at 4 or 5 o'clock in the afternoon and instead I coach football for a living."

Well now that he's at Nebraska he's probably making more money than he would have as a scientist ;)

Another story (just watch the damn video) is he made a recruiting app for UCF in a night. I hope he and the sports analytics team are talking.

Is it just me, or does it seem like the vast majority of our coaching staff seems to always have a chaw in during practice?
