  1. Agreed. I don't think either is worthy of disrespect, however.
  2. What's disingenuous is the false dichotomy that those who see this as an affront to the country and its defenders are also trying to "bat down our present-day fellow Americans into docile status-quo acceptance".
  3. I agree with their right to express themselves. That doesn't mean it's not classless, tasteless, and overall unbecoming of a representative of the taxpayer-funded University if Nebraska. You are way overreacting, its a simple peaceful protest which has happened multiple times throughout history, so whats the big f'ing deal? UNL should support their right to express their views if anything, if they were an overreaching University they would force them to stop. Simply let the players stand up for what they believe in, any resistance is a totalitarian movement that will reduce productivity and make the players become less loyal to the University they support. UNL should support their right to express their opinion. Like I said, you don't have to agree with it, just understand their right to voice their opinion. Their opinion is just as valid as anyone elses. I'm not "way overreacting". Overreacting would be asking for their expulsion. I'm saying they're classless and tasteless because they're intentionally showing a lack of respect for the symbol of our country and all who've sacrificed for it; which, incidentally, has nothing to do with what they're protesting. Everyone who has ever said they're disrespecting people who have sacrificed for the country is claiming they can read people's minds. Unless these players come out and say they don't give a sh#t about how they were protected during wars, then that's just a big giant guess on your part. If you're specifically talking about the lyrics of the song, why should someone who is fighting against systematic racism care all that much about sacrifices made by our soldiers during a time when slavery was legal? Respect for the flag is something that is ingrained in the minds of all members of the military. It means respect for the people who made the flag possible, so it's easy to infer that disrespect for the flag is disrespect for the people who made the flag possible. As for people fighting against perceived systemic racism, maybe they should care about the sacrifices of those soldiers because many of their progeny paid with their lives to end slavery. Might be something worthy of respect. It's just plain silly to think anyone's doing this to specifically diss soldiers or soldiers who died for the country. Especially when lots made it clear what they're specifically doing it for. To me the flag represents the country. It doesn't represent soldiers. I wasn't in the military but my dad fought in Vietnam and my grandpa was also in the Navy. The country has sent soldiers to die for unjust causes before. It's kind of similar to being against the Iraq/Vietnam wars but not against the soldiers who fought in them. The people doing this are against systematic racism which is something they think our country is allowing. It has nothing to do with soldiers fighting for the country. The United States is NOT a military state. The military is not identical to the country. They are separate things. I don't know why this is hard for so many people to grasp. Actually, you know, it isn't. It's a cynical red herring argument. The military made the country and its freedoms possible from the foundation. They ARE separate things, but neither would be possible without the other. It's not a red herring, in spite of your inability to understand it.

The problem is that many, many people do see it as an insult to this country's soldiers. Which is they overshadow what they're protesting by doing it during the national anthem.

I spoke of their progeny, who fought and died in the civil war.

I'm saying they're classless and tasteless because they're intentionally showing a lack of respect for the symbol of our country and all who've sacrificed for it; which, incidentally, has nothing to do with what they're protesting. So we should just blindly believe what our country has given us, cause they are insusceptible of criticism because they are the USA, which is the "greatest" country in the world, who shouldn't be criticized? That's complete bullsh#t, our country is fundamentally flawed, which is why we have this election with f'ing Hilary vs. Trump, the worst election ever, there is really no good choice. So democracy has failed most obviously, and some want to express their views on police brutality. Maybe just hear them out and understand that many in our community, including athletes, have opinions that may be against what many believe, but they are valid opinions nonetheless. This reaction is EXACTLY what they are trying to induce, to a f'ing T. You are all taking the bait just as the media would want. Just realize that. We are the greatest country in the world. That doesn't mean we're perfect, your straw man not withstanding. If democracy has failed, what alternative do you advocate? To your last point, you're absolutely right. They want to cause a reaction, the problem is that they create outrage against themselves, not what they're protesting,

Oh please. Classless is threatening bodily harm on these individuals. As a veteran, I fully support these non-violent protests. Maybe if people were willing to actually listen and empathize, we wouldn't have players kneeling during the anthem. No, threatening bodily harm would be called "criminal", not "classless".

  11. Ironic thing for you to say, given that you're Riley's biggest cheerleader on this board and he is <0.500 through his entire head coaching career.
  12. SE's decision to hire Riley is baffling in many regards. The only reasons I can come up with why Riley was chosen are: as a PR hire after Pelini's temper tantrums, or as a placeholder for someone more permanent in the near future. Neither of those are good reasons, IMO. Nothing in Riley's past, either at NU or OSU, is indicative of any measure of sustained success in the future. Given the decisions I've seen made on the field this year, I fully expect NU to be mediocre - at best - for the remainder of Riley's tenure here.
  13. Probably the worst play call/decision I've seen in 50+ years of FB watching. Still can't believe it. Tommy chose to make that pass. He had options and he chose the worst one. There was a guy wide open to his left in the flats beyond he sticks. Gee golly, perhaps you'd be a dumber coach than the guy you're criticizing...moron. The point he's making is that on 4th & 1 with Tommy Armstrong as your quarterback, you don't call a pass. I guarantee almost nobody on this board would have called that play, and that's because its a stupid call to make.
  14. Yeah, or you run 1 yard for first down and have 4 more plays....there's always that. The pass play was there. The blown call was third and 1 not just plowing Armstrong straight ahead behind center, where Iowa didn't have anybody lined up. Ran it off-tackle or whatever instead and got stuffed. https://twitter.com/SBNation/status/670397559517540353 I guess I'm too dumb to figure out how to imbed the tweet. More proof as to why TA needs to concentrate on his classes and have a good life away from football. He is legally retarded at playing the QB position. The really frustrating part is that a lot of the less intelligent posters will blame the coaches when they are trying to win games with a QB that is the equal to having one hand tied behind their back due to his lack of football intelligence. TA has guys wide open and most of the times chooses the wrong guy to throw to. That is on Bo's sorry ass for not recruiting anyone better and no depth. Now we are faced with starting a true freshman next year or face another year of bad QB play that will cost us games. TA just needs to go away and give his scholarship to someone who won't sabatoge the season with his poor decsion making. Do you realize that calling people retarded does not help make any sort of point, and does you no favors in looking more intelligent than the "less intelligent" posters you are attempting to call out? I think your post is an absolute insult to many very knowledgeable posters on this board. So, if they don't agree with your assessment that our loss or losses are all TA's fault and not on the coaches, they are not as smart as you? You narrow point of view reminds me of the Lieutenant that yells charge at the first sight of the enemy without ever looking at the larger picture. Every leader or coach in this situation, needs to evaluate the strengths and weakness of his team. They must understand his own teams center of gravity and evaluate the opponents center of gravity to better understand how to beat them. To over simplify, you then put your players in the best position you can based on this to win games. Yes, many times things can be attributed to TA and his poor decision making. However, it is on the coaches when they continually call plays that are not suited to a player who struggles throwing and accurate ball, does not account for the weather and does not display the decision making a veteran QB should. There are other questionable coaching nuggets we have all seen throughout the season as well, but this post is already long enough. Know your enemy and know yourself – your victory will be painless. Know the weather and the field – your victory will be complete. SunTzu The Art of War Great post. You show a deeper level of analysis than many people are capable of. Yes Tommy had an awful, awful game, but he was grossly mismanaged for the 11th and probably last time this season. Literally everyone reading this board knows that Tommy is a poor passer, that his strength is not passing, and yet our coaches called for 45 passing attempts, or 50%+ of the offensive plays on a day that was cold and windy. That is playing to your weaknesses and setting yourself up for failure. It's poor leadership by definition. This kind of inability to adapt to the resources you have is indicative of why these coaches are sub 0.500 over their long careers. We're never going anywhere with this kind of inflexible mentality.
