  1. See ya. and, yeah, I really don't understand the whole lining-up-in-the-shotgun-at-the-1-yard-line shtick. Thought it was silly last week too. If they had just run 3 QB sneaks, it's probably a 98% chance he gets in. If Gabbert dives on the keeper, it's in, too. This formation deal is overrated. We've had one of the best red zone percentages in the Big 12 in this offense. Also, he ran two plus from under center which is two more than they would've last year. Tigernuts -- I presume you have advance tickets to this Thanksgiving's hottest movie . . . From Pinkel / Yost Productions and Blaine Gabbert Studios and in coordination with Shotgun Cinema . . . "The Longest Yard" . . . Not Starring James Franklin. It defies logic to say that you're better off to throw the ball backwards 12 feet when you're 12 inches from scoring. Have they succeeded more often than not despite subscribing to this logic? Sure. But there are some notable failures, too. And they tend to come against your stingier defenses, i.e. the Huskers today and the Sooners in 2006. All I'm saying is that I don't think it would be too hard to line Egnew up at fullback, put Lawrence/Moore/Josey/Mosby behind him, and execute an I-Formation power run where the running back (a) gets the ball in relative proximity to the goal line and, (B) does so while running full speed ahead.
  2. Congratulations to all Husker fans. You must be very proud of your team, who played a great game. In terms of your defense, I saw what I feared I'd see -- good coverage in the secondary, good pressure up front from 3 or 4 rushers. In terms of your offense, I expected some explosive plays -- but thought they'd come from Martinez instead of Helu. At the end of day, I think we saw 2 pretty good teams go at it. One of them made a handful of big plays when they had the opportunity to do so; the other didn't (Woodland's inability to pull in Gabbert's sideline fade in the second quarter jumps to mind). I guess this is goodbye, as you're off to the B10 and I'm to ponder issues such as what causes Gary Stinkel (Pinkel's evil twin) to run plays out of the shotgun when he's a foot from scoring and how Texas is going to screw us next. I enjoyed what became a pretty decent rivalry over the last 7 years or so. Good luck --
  3. I assure you that Bernie doesn't speak for all Mizzou fans -- at least not those of us who are rational. Regrettably, we are a shrinking faction. Somehow, several years of moderate success have gone to some fans' heads. In the process, they're missing out on the single-greatest aspect of the Pinkel regime and that is that Mizzou football is finally (or once again, depending how old you are) RELEVANT. At the end of the day, isn't that all we can ask from our college teams? That they put us in the position to enjoy games like those that occurred last weekend and which are on the slate for this weekend? This may sound like loser talk to some, but the fact of the matter is that I won't be stepping between the lines on Saturday and my confidence in Mizzou's abilities has absolutely no bearing on the outcome of the game. GO TIGERS!
  4. Greetings from Missouri. A year ago this time I was exchanging posts about what improvements Nebraska had made and whether they were enough to close the 35-point gap that existed following the 2008 game. (I soon enough discovered that a player named Suh was all you needed to swing the tide back in your favor.) I would never have imagined that just a year later, we'd be preparing for the last conference meeting between our teams. I can't imagine how excited you must be to move forward with new rivalries against Iowa, Michigan, and others. Three weeks ago, I never would have imagined that I'd feel up to visiting a Husker message board. Mizzou was fresh off what was probably the most uninspired and sloppy 26-0 victory in the history of football. Meanwhile, I'd watched Taylor Martinez run around the K-State defense like they were standing still. I was fully prepared for Mizzou to lose both A&M and OU and was starting to think the Mizzou-NU game could get ugly. But then some weird things happened. Mizzou put together a solid game against A&M while Texas temporarily solved the Martinez riddle. And then Mizzou put together an even better game against an OU team that plainly isn't on par with OU teams of the past. And while Martinez rediscovered his magic against OSU, the Blackshirts end up allowing 40+ points. And that brings us to Saturday, which suddenly means a whole lot for BOTH teams. A win for Nebraska puts them in control of the North and puts them on track to play in the B12 title game. A win for Mizzou sustains, at least temporarily, its chances of an undefeated season (I can't believe those words just appeared on my screen). A bad loss for Mizzou renders it a fraud in the eyes of all. I'll be honest -- I have no idea what to expect. Is our defense fast enough to stay with or contain Martinez? Will Dos Pelinis blitz Gabbert (OU either couldn't or wasn't interested in doing so) and, if so, how will Gabbert react? I desperately want Mizzou to win, but I'd put my money on Nebraska if I was a betting man. They are, in my opinion, the best team Mizzou will play this regular season and the game is in Lincoln. Enjoy the game, and best of luck in the B10.
  5. Congratulations to all the Husker fans. I can't imagine how pleased you must be with last night's result. A win is one thing, but to win after showing the resolve that your team showed and after overcoming a variety of adverse conditions is another thing. It's wins like that that make you wonder if there's not something special about your team. As for Mizzou, I'm still not sure who we are. Only time will tell and we'll just have to enjoy the ride. P.S. -- My seats are behind the visitor's bench. During the mid- to late-third quarter, it appeared that another quarterback was warming up (#17, perhaps). Was there any talk on television or in the newspapers about that? Was Zac injured or were they contemplating making a switch? It was right after that that he started lighting things up.
  6. My understanding is that it is state-of-the-art and could drain 4-6 inches of water an hour. According to reports, total rainfall so far is in the vicinity of 3.5 with another 1.5 by the time the storm is over. I'm never sure how these types of developments impact games. The sipmlistic approach would be, in my opinion, to say that inclement weather and less-than-perfect field conditions favor the Huskers.
  7. There seem to be some conflicting reports about the weather as the day proceeds. NWS says heavy rain into the evening, but local Columbia weather reports are apparently predicting only a drizzle by gametime. Safe travels to those Huskers traveling to and from the game.
  8. If I were a Husker fan, I would be encouraged by what we saw last night. I am certainly happy that Gabbert was able to put together a nice stat line and do what needed to be done to get the W, but I can't help but be concerned about the fact that (a) Mizzou couldn't run the ball; and (B) Nevada's second- and third-string RBs were blowing through gaping holes at times. There are lots of loose ends to be pinned down before B12 play begins.
