Nebraska vs. #13 Creighton 12/6/12

My thoughts after leaving the BOB.

-Creighton is not that good. Nebraska was 10x more physical then them. They will be out by the 3rd round of the tourney.

-No way in hell should Mcdermott be a preseason all american. He got worked all night. His points were backside putbacks and open jumpers. He was getting manhandled IN THE PAINT by our guards. It was hilarious. He really is not that great.

-Creighton's "big man" from venezuela is not all that he is cracked up to be either. He could not make a 1v1 post move on Ubel or Almeaida all night. Also hilarious. Good rebounder though.

-Lots of fight in these skers. Good to see.

-The elbow mike peltz dropped on that kid in scrum was one for the ages. Surprised the kid got up.

-Almedia really gave me more hope tonight. Im usually pretty hard on him but he worked his a$$ off. That dunk was a monster. It's a shame he couldn't get more opportunities to work venezuela.

Unless Creighton reloads a good amount and gets a real good big, this series could turn Nebraska's way starting very soon, I think. Creighton is not that good.
Could not agree more with this point. I have never been impressed with his skill set and I think he flourishes due to the conference he plays in.

You guys are dead wrong when it comes to McDermott. He doesn't look the part. That's certainly true and everyone knows it. What makes him a great player, and yes, he is a great player, are his intangibles. Much in the same way that Tyler Hansborough and Jimmer Fredette were elite college players, McDermott is as well. He beats you to spots, he crashes the boards harder than you, he uses his body well, he runs the floor, he does the little things.

This is true. Maybe saying I am unimpressed with his skill set was the wrong way of phrasing it. He's not a flashy player but is solid and fundamentally sound. I would take Zeller from IU Plumlee from Duke or McAdoo from UNC before I would McDermott.

Interesting views on McDermott expressed in here. I turned to my buddy numerous times last night and said, "well, hard to stop that. Dammit...that kid is good, gotta admit."

Seeing him in person, he's bigger than I thought. And what makes him good is that he just seems to intuitively know how to get the ball in the basket. It's not pretty a lot of the times...he scores a lot of workmanlike baskets in the paint. You don't get additional points for aesthetics though.

And he's got range, obviously. Honestly, we all know that game was pretty much going one way about ten minutes into the first half. At one point, we were trailing by a decent margin, and someone (Talley, maybe? Who had a tough game, btw) hit a three, and Doug marches down court and IMMEDIATELY drains a three, just steps up and swishes it like he was taking a drink of water. I'm a Husker guy period. From my vantage point, Doug McDermott is the real deal. He might not be a back to back national AA, but the kid isn't overhyped. He's legit.

This season will be tough. A huge percentage of our offense is going to have to be supplied by Talley and Gallegos. And when we start playing the really good teams, both of those guys are going to be hot for us to pull out a win. Last night neither guy had his game going, and we see the result. We've got three kids redshirting who would play substantial minutes if they could this season, and we'll be bringing in an upper tier guard next season.

Guys....we're gonna have to do our best to force ourselves to be patient this year. But I think we all knew that anyway.

EDIT: I didn't mean Creighton isn't one of those really good teams, btw. I mean, that's basically what played out. Dylan struggled offensively and Gallegos didn't do much. (And he was confusingly kept off the court quite a bit, I thought anyway.)

Creighton exposed what future teams will.  Take away Ray and Talley, pack the paint and DARE anyone else to score.

This team is already severely challenged offensively and when other teams take away your few scoring threats..........what you get is what you saw last night.

I counted at least three times where he was matched up one on one in the block with Peltz, and even better yet, BENNY PARKER, and he couldn't seal them on the block. Peltz pushed his backdown attempt to the 3 point line. Utterly hilarious. An all american, on a 6 foot walk on. Couldn't capitalize. Almost all of his points came off bad switches on screens, and he had at least 5 misses within 5 feet.

It's all subjective, but if he played in the B1G he wouldn't have half the hype he does.

I watched the game on my new 27 inch iMac, ESPN3 live. My analysis is as follows:

1. NU does not have any talent!

2. Their lack of foot speed and quickness is glaring.

3. They lack defensive savvy.

4. They do not have a scoring threat (inside or outside) and cannot score.

5. They do not possess poise in difficult situations.

6. They did a surprising job of rebounding, despite not being very physical.

7. The lack of post play on offense is extreme.

8. Because of the lack of talent, they have very few offensive sets and options.

9. Revert to observation number 1.

10. Revert to observation number 1 and 9.

Now, the question remains, will the new head coach be able to recruit, teach basketball and get this program to improve. He has a monumental job ahead of him.
Did you watch them last season? We have already improved from last season. When watching Miles you actually see him coaching and teaching players. Gallegos has out of nowhere found confidence in his shot. Miles has signed 3 players that are top 30 at their respected positions. We have 2 BCS transfers eligible next season and a JUCO AA PG redshirting.

You will be impressed with Miles guaranteed
I have watched Husker basketball ever since 1969. When NU built the Devaney Sports Center, it was supposed to put us in the top echelon of our conference and help us be competitive . Well, how did that work out? A few notable wins here and there but nothing of major importance. However if you read my statement, "Now, the question remains, will the new head coach be able to recruit, teach basketball and get this program to improve? He has a monumental job ahead of him," no where did I say we didn't improve. Improvement is relative only to the place from where you start. So, showing improvement in this team does not mean we will win a lot of games this year. I hope the man can recruit, because in the day and age that is the bottom line.

One thing I did notice about last night, was our ineptness on defense. We are not fast, not quick, and not too smart on making defensive switches, a lethal combination as is evidenced by the final score. The NU players did not stay with their assigned man and got burnt by numerous wide open shots drained by the Jays.

I support all NU sports. However, I am not one to get all excited and jump on the bandwagon about improvement when you start as far back as we are. Improvement to me means winning games consistently, winning some notable big games, and winning (or at least contending/competing for) championships! Then, and only then, can you really measure improvement.

How many points did he score against Wisconsin again? I forgot...

You better go look it up then, huh? We understand you are all over his nuts. You obviously don't understand what subjective means.

No, I just think hes a good player. As I do many other players around the nation.

Your "subjective" opinion is based on your hate for Creighton, which you spew every year. You picked a few plays out of a game and claim he shouldn't be an all-american when hes proven time and again he can hang with some teams from the better conferences. He scored 20 against UNC, which is just a few points off his season average. He scores 30 against Wisconsin which is known as one of the better defensive teams in the B1G. Those are just two examples. Watch some of their games this year and watch them objectively, not rooting against Creighton, and then talk to me about the type of player he is. If you still think the same, then thats fine.

Until then, keep hating on Creighton and their fans and saying Im all over McDermotts nuts. Sorry that I enjoy watching good basketball players. Im all over a bunch of players nuts then, in college and the NBA.

And one last thing, you guys that keep saying this series will be all Nebraska starting next year without basing it on anything except Tim Miles, this will never be a one-sided rivalry for either team. Tim Miles probably will make Nebraska a good ball team, but Creighton usually always has a solid team. I can see it as going back and forth, but never one-sided.

What the hell was the T for?
McDermitt tossed the ball into the air (no one touched it if I recall) as he was dribbling and then caught it and dribbled some more and made a shot- Miles went nuts and was called for the T... I believe the refs made the correct call. Yo can catch your own air ball on a shot and put it back up.
No you can not.
I hate to play devils advocate because I hate the scumbags from creighton, but yes, you can. The rule was changed a few years ago. And that is not even what happened. Mcdermott drove and tried to draw contact but just looked like an idiot and came down, which should be a travel. The ref said that Ubel blocked it out of his hands. Which he didn't, it was a travel, and a middle school level call.
Well its really in the eyes of the official.. You really aren't supposed to, it still is considered a pass to yourself (which is why Miles was so pissed because it didnt hit anything) but the officials can judge is a conscious attempt at making it was attempted. The officials and Coach thought differently.
