Braylon Heard Transferring...

This is disappointing. Braylon was on the verge of being a big time contributor and was one injury away from being the man. The thing I find most disturbing is that he apparently didn't want to, or think he could, compete for one of the top two positions. I really don't want to be bitter and I wish him the best but where in the hell is his head at? I like Ameer and yes a couple recruits look promising but how does this kid look at his situation going into this season and not think he's got every opportunity in the world? Tells me that maybe he isn't quite the competitor that he needs to be to succeed at this level. If it were easy, anybody could do it.

Great, one of my favorite Huskers are leaving the team. I don't think I have been this sad in a while. I wish him the best of luck. Standout guy and one HELL of a player.

I would feel better seeing Heard transfer to Kentucky rather than Ohio St. just to play closer to home.

We shouldn't be surprised that this caught Pelini and the coaching staff off guard, most of their attention has been directed towards recruiting, as has ours. So to be blindsided with a curveball that a potentially 2nd string back is transferring, it shocks pretty much all of us.

So our staff lacks the ability to keep 4 star talent on campus and is so terrible at roster management they wanted to move our 2nd string RB to WR after moving him from CB? The kid should leave as the staff is wasting his college career

When did they try to move him to receiver? I hadnt heard that yet.

Let's see Bama has used dual back for several years and won 3 MNC's in 4 years. Wisky uses tandem backs as does UGA. If we recruit multiple kids, we need to start using multiple kids. That, IMO, would alleviate kids going else where. This staff fails to try and give more than the #1 guy a shot at playing time until the #1 guy gets hurt.........

I admire Heard for working so hard to get here, switching to DB and back and THEN playing last year even though initial reports were he was done for the season with injury, but still played IIRC. Best of luck to him.

We do, and we have the entire Bo era.... This past season we used 4 different RB's about as well as you can use four guys.... Rarely (if ever) do teams split the carries between 3+ backs evenly, and that is why Heard missed on some carries. When you have backs like Rex, and Ameer where do you use a Heard? It is hard too take talent like that (Rex/Ameer) off of the field! This was going too be his year, so if he is leaving for playing time, then it just doesn't make sense.... We are deep at the position, and I've seen some people on Twitter (Sipple and Harvey) point out that they think Newby might have been the backup anyways....Good luck too him, and GBR!

You call what we did splitting carries? 20+ for Abdullah and a few scraps for the other two isn't splitting carries

Abdullah--- 226 carries

Burkhead--- 98

Cross ---- 55

Heard -----52

And don't forget, we have a talented running QB

Martinez --- 195 carries

So, yes, that is pretty good balance when splitting carries between 5 players like we did. 5 players over 50 carries? That is splitting carries!!

You can't have four #1 running backs..... Your best back gets the most carries, and with Burkhead out, Ameer was out best option....

Ameer got so many carries due to Rex being hurt. Take him out of the equation for practically all the season. When your 2nd string RB has the best YPC he might need to have the ball a few more times then 5 at best a game

We'll leave those decisions too Bo/Beck/Brown.... Not a self-proclaimed "insider" or "recruiting guru"....

Jay Simms averaged like 11 yards per carry in '95. More than Green, Benning, Childs, and Phillips.

Cross is a beast, but he's not an every-down back. If Ameer goes down, we're in serious depth trouble and will be depending on a couple of freshmen to step up. That's scary. Also scary is the huge workload that we're going to dump on Ameer now. Those 80,90,100 carries that Braylon figured to get next year would make a huge difference in keeping Ameer fresh.

We differ there, I see him as an every down back. He wouldn't be productive in our spread formations, but Beck has a very multiple offense, and I could see Cross becoming the every-down back if he was needed....

I think the 80-100 carries that Heard was going to get are going to be handed to Cross. He's a thumper. Every down back? I agree-no. Not in this system the way we try to be multiple in the run game-lateral and north/south. But he brings more of a power element to the run game that can open up a dimension that Abdullah cant quite do. Also, between Newby and Taylor, one of those just has to be able to bring some relief to the table. I personally think now the key will be them two and what at least one of them can bring immediately.

Taylor looks more prepared physically but Newby looks like a Heard clone in my eyes. That is a massive compliment as I feel Heard could take 1/2 the carries at RB this season

Logic always manages too escape you doesn't it.....

By multiple, I meant that Beck has a very, very unique offensive system, where he has incorporated a number of different styles of football (power, spread, etc.) into one single system. You are allowed, maybe too your surprise, too be multiple within one brand/style of football (again----power, spread, etc.).... Now, would Cross work in the spread? Well, it wouldn't be ideal. However, he would be able too be used in a number of ways out of our power sets (See: Leveon Bell)....

I wasn't aware (by your logic) that being a running back that is tailor-made too a certain style of football means that you can't be an every down back... ------Defying your logic----------> Adrian Peterson, Frank Gore, Lacey(Bama kid), Bell, Ron Dayne, the list could literally go on, and on....
