Spring Practice Updates

This is funny but I think that there are a few things that need to be said.

1) most people knew the D was in for a rough season last year. No depth and lack of athletic presence. It was pretty obvious from what was being said and seem from spring until a couple weeks into the season. Thank God Becks offense started to work. Bo had even acknowledged that he messed up depth wise.

2) the defense is better but it wont be dominant. Coaches are trying to season them but they are also focused on trying to up the turnover count this season by using speed and hoping to integrate different looks since the speed will be everywhere not just at certain spots. This is where having interchangeable pieces comes in so its harder to identify coverages. Also don't expect a 2009 defense. Im betting we will be above average but not near what (some) clearly hope we do. Next year or the year after could be very very good dependent on how our DL recruits pan out

Well if we don't have the potential, then how would we ever get passed it?

I said I don't see the potential. When you are shown the same results for 5 years how do you see potential for better? We have been saying this is the year for the last how many seasons? I'm not going to be optimistic like previous seasons until Bo and Co show it on the field.

Our spring defensively is going as expected with so many young faces. Between now and kickoff is where these boys need to grow

Its going better than coaches thought it would. It's up to the players to stay in the play book until summer and retain the info. They are more consistent than they were last year at this point. It's really going to come down to who sticks with film and playbook over the stretch after spring camp... it will help further with consistency.

Bo's been saying since he got here he's here to win championships. 6 years later. . . ?? I'm not truly unhappy. I think we're a long way from having the potential to go a long way. Bo's a long way from fielding the kind of team that plays championship caliber football. It's not necessarily all on the talent level either, I don't think, it's the consistent inconsistency. We're a mistake-prone football team.

Every coach is in their position to win championships. But in reality, if anyone expected one by now, is completely delusional. You have to build a sound program before you can take that next step. Bo finally has his coaching staff he likes, and that is the first step. Recruiting is the second step, and it starts to flow from there. The inconsistency come from the lack of talent, and immaturity of the players. That mostly steers from converting players (because of the lack of talent/recruiting), and players being young. Bo did all he could in the WI game, and players were in position to make stops. Thats where the lack of talent steps in. Coaches can put you in position, but its up the player to make the play.

I don't know about that. A lot of people outside of Husker nation were picking us to win conference titles in '10 and '11. It's hard to call "experts" and people outside the program delusional Husker fans. Maybe the teams just underachieved.

'10 we were favored because the defense wasn't expected to take such a drop like we did. We had that game in the bag, but we folded, horribly. '11, I am not sure how we were a favorite, especially with the schedule they gave us.

Bo has proven that he can run a solid team. National Championship worthy? Not yet because the talent wasn't there, except defensively in '09. '10, he showed he can get his team to the Big 12 Championship with a below average team, who led the nation in turnovers. '11, same thing, and had Crick not had that concussion, then go out with the tricep injury, we could have been looking at a better year. '12, piss poor defense, with a turnover happy offense, who held us together. TALENT wise, and with the coaches we have, we NOW have the potential to go a long way. I never stated that we have had that potential. Bo has gotten us further than I have expected with the talent we have had. Now that we have the talent, its a whole different ball game. Do I expect a National Title this year? No way. Do I expect us to get to the CCG? Yes I do. Win it? Depends on how good tOSU looks throughout the year, but if they are anything like last year, yes I do expect to win it. Win the Rose Bowl, if we win, depends on who we are playing, but winning the CCG is a victory on its own.

How is my coaching staff theory interesting? Care to explain? We have a Secondary coach, who loves our program and is a SOLID recruiter. Same goes for Els. Garrison at OL is great, as he is a good coach and great recruiter. Fisher, Brown and Beck all speak for themselves. Kaz, his resume speaks for itself at Iowa as well. They ran a top 10 rushing defense in the nation since he was there. He is gone one year, and look... We have coaches who want to be here and want to coach. The only questioning positions that I am not sold on is, Pap at DC, and Cotton at TE's coach. With Pap given more control over the defensive calls, this will be his year to shine.

Just getting us ready for the "we made mistakes out there and shouldn't have given up 70 pts, BUT we are a young defense and will improve"

No excuses allowed this season. Our defense is young because we pooped the bed for years in recruiting. A defensive genius should be able to put a group of young talented guys and make them at the very least average. He said himself he didn't forget how to coach defense. Just how to recruit it

With Pap being given more freedom with defensive calls? We have supposedly one of the best defensive minds in the game leading our team and we are giving more control to a guy that's resume is NU and nothing else only during Bo's tenure.

Els being listed as a solid coach and recruiter is also completely opinion as he has shown nothing in either. Not to mention he openly said they did a bad job recruiting in season. Our special teams have been a joke under his watch as well.

It just gets very old when someone comes into the threads, sh#t on the positive, and takes it to an attack on Bo. This is nothing new.

Attack on Bo? What did I say that was an attack? Stating the obvious in recruiting? You even agree with me in regards to his recruiting. Bo is going to be criticized he is the HC at NU!

I have said several positive things in many threads. Feel free to overlook those and act like I hate Bo and want him to lose all of his games yada yada. No one else in this thread feels like I filling it with attacks on Bo etc.

My Els comment just being an opinion? Jared Afalava, Zaire Anderson, Thomas Brown, Michael Rose, Josh Banderas, Marcus Newby and Courteny Love all say hi, and they obviously were a 2nd choice to Nebraska. Els shouldn't be coaching special teams, as I firmly believe he has enough responsibilities with being head recruiter and LB coach. Thanks to every coach doing extra work, our special teams should be much better than last year.
