Stewart Mandel is not a Boliever

... whatnots ... tatting ... Boleavers ...

I can't believe I was cynical about why Stewart wrote this piece now. What was I thinking?

Allemande left your corner...
i guess i am just not as cynical as you. mandel seemed spot on to me. also, it was not even an article, if he wrote a full piece on this i might share your view. like you said, it is the dead of winter, how many questions could he have? what else is there to discuss? seems like as good as anytime to evaluate a coach and what we can expect next year (should be pretty obvious by now).

when could a writer be critical about the huskers in the offseason and not be accused of ulterior motives? especially because, regardless of tone or position, everything they do is to get readers; so none of their opinions are ever genuine? it is all just a ruse to rile up fans?

it was a quick and easy topic he could write off-the-cuff, perfect to fill out his mailbag article.

but i guess, like every other year, we have a lot to be happy about and look forward to so it is just silly for a writer to think we need to part ways with bo; and to say so in the dead of winter? oh my. the guy still managed 9 wins, after all.

If your premise is that every time a writer has been critical of Nebraska in the offseason I suspect him of ulterior motives, you'll have to back that up with... something.

Do your research, Anderson.

i tried, but i am not very efficient at researching on this board. just off memory, i seem to remember a few times that you have just dismissed an opinion as someone just trying to get hits. but that is fine, we can just specifically discuss mandel and your accusation that he said what he said when he said it for hits.

if mandel's sole goal was to "sell clicks," i really do not care because i think he was accurate, that it needs to be said (or repeated), and i am glad he fielded that particular question. i am still unsure why this is any worse of a time to say what he said than any other. and again, everything they do is to garner traffic, it does not mean that their opinions are not genuine or accurate or do not need to be said.

Whether you agree with Mandel or not is irrelevant to the question of why he chose to field this particular question now.

I don't have to explain to you why everything every writer writes is intended to generate traffic. I'm not sure why you're bringing that up, because you know better.

And if you can point out where I'm dismissing his opinion because I think he's trying to garner hits, I'd like to see it. I kinda sorta agree with him. But because I don't think he's entirely wrong (or entirely right) that doesn't mean I can't point out the why of the publishing of this mail.

here are a couple of examples of you dismissing the opinion of someone as them just trying to get hits.

We're still less than 4 months away from the first snap being taken, and yet somehow Copernicus has his "post spring game preseason midsummers night Top 25"...

These top 25's are the desperation of having nothing left to write about from the spring games, nobody transfering, and nobody being arrested for anything...
Exactly. And you get a rise out of certain fanbases by ranking them too high, too low, or not at all.

It generates discussion and it drives hits to his website. I think most everyone knows that's what he's doing - it is his business, after all - but it still rankles to be left out. Just like it's supposed to.

We're too easily manipulated, even when we know we're being manipulated and we should strive against it.
here is one in response to tweets, not even an article. tweets really do not get "hits."

Ubben wrote that to get hits to his blog, and posting a thread like this just gets him more hits.

why wouldn't he? people are still obviously interested in it. i just do not think he is doing it to swing at the beehive or whatever.

i did not ask you to. i agree, everything they do is for web hits, but should that invalidate everything they publish?

i never said you could not point out the why of the publishing, i just disagree with you. but i also do not think it should be dismissed because of the timing, which i think is irrelevant.

you are saying he should have disregarded a fan question because the fan was too late to the punch. this is not addressed to you, but it seems that nebraska fans get equally mad when we are ignored, because everyone hates us then. i guess it is a tough rope to walk.

Alot. He even talks about it on his podcasts regarding the offseason. I know I've emailed him probably half a dozen various questions on Nebraska over the past month, and this is the one he answers?

i am unsure what your questions regarded, but perhaps a lot more husker fans are asking similar questions as the one he responded to seeking some validation for their hope in next season and mandel thought it was time to let us know that we are silly for expecting anything different next year. maybe he wants the bo issue to die, but there was enough interest from fans that he thought it would be prudent to address it.

again, next year may be different, but it is getting increasingly harder to expect anything different. frankly, i would be equally surprised with a 7 win season as i would with an 11 win season.

This isn't beating a dead horse, it's beating a fossilized ancient skeleton. Yeah, Bo's a big meanie, yeah he yells on the sideline a little and can be a d bag in press conferences. Get over it, he's our coach for the foreseeable future, minus an epic meltdown by the team, or if it comes to light that he's been eating babies for breakfast. Geeze......

Haha. Every writer's job is to generate hits. These sports analysts? Their jobs are not riding on the quality of their analysis, but on how compelling their writing is. So if they have (or can purport to have) an attention-grabbing opinion, the incentive is there for them to proclaim it. There's nothing sinister about that.

Mandel covers college football nationally. As such, he'll hit the big, surface level issues of most teams. The more nationally relevant a program, the more in-depth features they get because that's what people are paying attention to. He's not there to pump out feel-good stories acknowledging every 9-4 team's turnarounds in various units so their fans can be happy; they have the local rags for that. Nationally, the relevant topic about the Huskers this year has been Bo's job status. He's voiced his opinion on it briefly in the past, and probably gets the bulk of his Nebraska-related responses regarding that.

So this can't be surprising. I don't think Mandel goes out of his way to stir the pot. There are a lot bigger pots to stir for him. This is a question that probably a very small portion of his readership cares about, and it's hardly like he reached for a very against-the-grain, controversial opinion.
