Interesting topic on 1620 (Parents of athletes)

My oldest son is 14 and is a HUGE baseball freak when it comes to playing. We have put him in varies camps and he is starting to get noticed and has received letters from schools wanting him to camp there. We have talked to him about the opportunities that he could have if he keeps up the hard work and that we will be behind him 100% no matter his decision. He came out and said that if he could play in college, he would love to play at Texas. I dislike Texas but can't really disagree with his choice because of the program they have. I still have a few years to see if he changes his mind but I will support him no matter.

Just explain to him only two things come from Texas... And he doesn't look like a Steer.

I agree with this too, no doubt that everyone is different and have different levels of understanding and or experiences. I had gone through the recruiting process with my oldest boy who grew up as I did loving Husker Football. He was courted by Nebraska, K.State, Iowa State and a few others a long ways from home. I went with him on all the tours, coach meetings and testing’s they all did. Unfortunately he was injured his Jr year to the point where football was no longer an option. As hard as we tried to get the experts to give us a different opinion, the bottom line rested with the UNL doctors and the Nebraska Spine specialist. Good news is he did get his education and is doing very well professionally. It is still hard however wondering what could have been. Was not worth the chance of him becoming paralyzed though and while I say that, I say it for his sake not mine.

Maybe this will sound like I am bragging (maybe I am a little) but the kid was 250lbs and was benching 440 in High school. His records still hold to this day at that school. I am seeing kids in their Sr. season at UNL going to pro days not lifting that much and weighing 300+lbs. Sorry for the rant. Regardless, I would have supported him in any choice he would have made.

Not to get off topic, but that's as real cool story Takoda. i would love it if someday, my son or daughter, would have a chance to play at a high-collegiate level. I am glad things worked out for your son.

Malik McDowell wants to go to Michigan State, but his mother is against the choice. His parents have said they would like to see their son attend college out of state.

I seen that article a day or two about the MSU kid. There is some interesting comments and different points of view below the article. Perhaps the mom wants him to start new away from the influences of friends that might try to latch on ?

Personally I agree with you krc. When I was in the military and had guys come to the same duty station as their family/friends, it was hard to get him out of the high school mode since his friends were still in it and not wanting to advance their lifestyle.

Best thing I did was get out of my circle of friends and start my life on my own. I would probably still be making $11 an hour if I stayed home.

Stumpy, maybe when Nebraska can show they can get to the CWS and possibly win a Natty, his mind might change.

Me personally, my little girl (when that day comes) can go where she pleases, but the school better have GREAT academics and I better like the institute. If I go somewhere like MSU and my daughter got drunk on the visit and heard anything about them being fine with students missing classes, then I would step in and say no, no matter what. Each case is different though.

Btw, the reason I bring up MSU, is because they were suppose to have an instate kid sign with them on NSD and they never received his LOI. When they called, the mother said that she isn't going to sign it because her son was drinking during the visit and an athlete had told him that they really didn't have to go to some classes if they didn't want to.
