March 15, Sipple: NU long way from last spring's defensive quagmire

"I think it's way different," said senior weakside linebacker Zaire Anderson. "Some people were scared to communicate on the field last spring because they didn't want to mess up the next person."

Um, think for a second about that quagmire.

"But now, everyone knows what they're doing," Anderson said. "Everyone's communicating. Everyone's having fun. Last spring, it wasn't really fun. Nobody knew what they were doing. The coaches were yelling at us. It was rough."

The defense from the beginning of last season compared to the unit we saw by the end of the season was night and day. Even halfway through the year it started getting good to watch. They played Michigan St. Pretty tough, and against Michigan I thought was probably the best defensive performance all season.

The young guys might still be young but in terms of experience, we are past the youth stage. They should all be on the same page by fall. Gonna be a badass defense to watch I think.

Yeah, we did get pretty solid by the end of the year. While the Spring-to-Spring comparison is just talk for now, it's still encouraging that we can build on it.

I understand they were young last year, so was the problem their ability to learn, Bo's defense is too complicated for new players or something else.
Bo's defense is really freaking complicated and we had roughly a bajillion new players on our D. There's your answer.

I think at the beginning of the year in the front seven the two deep had 11 players that were sophomores or younger.

Why do you need to ask any other questions?

That is totally different than plugging in a couple young guys amongst upperclassmen that are experienced.
