How much is proven to be an every down back?

We already have an every down back in Ameer so none of the backups need to be proven every down backs

What in the hell are you talking about? This was stated because someone said he won't get there because of the talent we have in that position. In order for carries to be taken away, a significant amount, don't you need ANOTHER PROVEN every down back? Outside of Cross, who is only a short yard/relief RB, who else is there? Because Cross sure in the hell hasn't been that guy. I don't see Cross getting anymore carries than he got last year, unless there is an injury or he can be that guy that can be more than a relief/short yardage RB.

Say Cross gets the same amount of carries as last year. We've already heard Ameer's words himself that Terrell is probably the most talented back in the room, so he'll likely get more carries than he did last year. Adam Taylor redshirted but has been drawing a good amount of praise so there's one back that can possibly contribute in meaningful snaps that we didn't have last year.

None of them are proven every down backs, as you say, but Ameer will likely get at least 2-4 fewer carries per game minimum, which could be over 50 carries lost on the year.

Who said anything about a proven third down back? I stated an EVERY down back. Because Ameer says Newby is the most talented back, its proven? Your just arguing a statement I said, for what? UNLESS Cross can be an every down back, he will be used just like he was last year. A short yardage, relief RB. I don't see anyone taking carries away from Ameer, especially with it being his Senior year. Only time that rock will be out of his hands, is due to an injury, relief during drives, or us having a large lead. Until we can find a guy who can carry the load of this team, like Abdullah, he won't see less carries by a significant amount at least.

My apologies I thought you were implying that only a proven every down back would take carries away from Ameer so if we had proven backs that weren't every down backs, he wouldn't be losing any snaps.

I don't think anybody is saying that any of the runningbacks are going to "beat" Ameer or "steal" carries that would otherwise be his. It's just not a stretch to think that he will get less per game because we won't need him to have it in his hands on every play the way we did at times last year, and because keeping him fresh will be a priority.

We did think the same thing last year you're right, but a big part of his carries was due to a lack of Taylor Martinez.

If games are as close as they were last year, or in reach, I don't see anyone else besides Ameer being on that field. It all depends on the situation we are in.

If we can put games away before the 4th, his carries will drop, but who knows how many yards he will have by then, but this goes back to one of those reasons I listed on why you would see someone else getting reps.

Why? Imani Cross and the other talent in our backfield. He won't be getting every carry throughout the season, nor should he.

He is incredibly versatile and talented, probably the best RB in the nation. He could most definitely handle getting every single carry, like the guy who will lead the nation in yards (for College State University in the Small Teams Conference because he's the only talent the team has...) but Cross will get and deserves the carries that he'll get. Cross will probably have just as many TD's as AA, but only because he has been our short yardage back. I know AA will get his carries in the red zone, he'll be down there in the red zone, with the game on the line (like he was during Michigan), but during the games that aren't on the line, we have the lead, and don't want to risk an injury to AA. Cross will be getting those carries. And he should, he'll have plenty of amazing plays (thinking of his amazing run against Wyoming last year).

I'd love to see it, but we're too fortunate to have the talent that we have in the backfield behind him that are capable of being a premier back at College State University (The Generals?). It's a good problem to have, Could he do it? Without a doubt in my mind. He's the most talented back we've had in a long time. A true Heisman Candidate at the RB position.

yup, and lessons learned from Rex Burkhead and Taylor Martinez will also take 3-400 yards from Abdullah. I'd be perfectly fine with him having 50 carries going into the MSU game, and 20 of those coming against Miami.

I hope we won't need for him to get 1500. I hope we spread it out and that the younger guys can become productive and give Abdullah some breaks. I think he can be a 100+ yard back in every game, but I hope we don't need him to be. I hope Tommy can make the passing game work more efficiently as well - to take some pressure off of Abdullah.

Newby, while he hasn't had enough carries to really show his true potential, I don't see him getting enough to inflict Ameer's carries.

Taylor, while we can say he will get a good portion, this is just all speculation, as he hasn't even seen a collegiate snap. I am a firm believer in this kid, and is my favorite guy in the backfield (except for Ameer), but I need to see it on the field to say that he will be a contributor.

Now for your question on how to prove for them to be quality backs... you play them during reliefs or when your in a comfortable lead and non conference games. This is how its done at every other school. They don't just throw them out when the competition is fierce and put the game on the line, when you have that PROVEN guy already.

I'd like to see his carries decreased by 50-60 but his average to go up by 1 yard. And that still puts him over 1500.

Abdulla had Heisman numbers last year and we still lost 4 games. The team comes first. There are some good quality backs that need to see the field, as well. We used to reload at all the positions, not have to break in 2nd stringers that had little playing time. This could be the year, when we can give these other backs the whole fourth Q. Abdullah will still have a great year, I just hope we don't keep him out there just to run up his totals.

Cross did have 10 TD's on 85 carries with a 5.3 yard average last year.
Cross had 7 TD's on 55 carries with a 5.9 yard average his freshman year.

That would be 17 TD's on 140 carries and a 5.5 yard average throughout his career.

Seems like he deserves carries to me.
