They had multiple QB's because Cook was awful in the early season.

Probably somewhat of a self-fulfilling thing don't you think? Only give a young quarterback a few reps and he might not be able to produce the way he would being 'the guy'. Either way, the majority of our fanbase dismissed them as not being legitimate, and continued to dismiss them even after our game because apparently we were better than them we just turned the ball over

No, not really. I watched MSU a bunch early, they had to take him out because he wasn't doing anything at the helm.

As for that game, Nebraska handed them a W. With five turnovers, 3-4 or which were unforced (MSU had zero), it was a 1 score game with 8 minutes to go. So, I can see why people think that.
They had the #2/#3 defense too, with a top 10 turnover margin as a team - but i'm sure that had nothing to do w/ it...it was all Nebraska.

Considering that Nebraska put more yards on Michigan state than any other team on their schedule (yes, even ohio state), and averaged over 6 YPP, I think it's fair to say that Nebraska hurting themselves with 3-4 unforced turnovers was huge.

There's a reason that the advanced stats for that game was so outta whack.

I watched that game again today, and knowing we were going to lose allowed me to focus on the play, signal calling, and execution. Our defense looked stout (especially RG44), and Beck's play calling looking pretty good. The failures came in execution on the offensive side of the ball, leading to the unforced TO. Cook also has some legit big-time throws to keep some drive alive. In the end, we had their number, but our (youth on) offense could not get out of their own way.

I'll have to re-watch that as well, but based off my less than great memory, I thought I remembered our special teams putting the offense in some tough situations. If I recall, the special teams literally gave away some points? The Westerkamp fumble comes to mind.

Wanted to say though that I agree, the defense was pretty decent. I also remember hearing a lot about how our run game would be shut down, it was actually pretty effective. The other thing I agree with from your take, and not a lot of people gave credit where it was due, but you're right, Cook made some freaking unbelievable throws when they needed them. Especially in some third downs I think. We had coverage, he just put it right where it had to be. We didn't deserve to win that game necessarily, due to the unbelievably stupid turnovers, but still we could have won that game.

Yup. There were some of those throw where I was thinking, wow, only against Nebraska.

The Westerkamp fumble did us no favors, but their punter was #1 in the nation, iirc, coming into that game in putting the ball within 10 yds of the end zone, and he delivered over and over again in that game. I'm glad you mentioned how it was thought that our run game would be shutdown in that game because I forgot to mention it. It has been a month or two since I watched any game film from Nebraska until I rewatched the MSU match up yesterday, but Ameer leaped off the screen with his play. He had tremendous vision, quick bursts, and hard fought yards in that game. Everyone looked a step behind him everytime he had the ball.
