Athlon Sports: 2014 Big Ten Predictions

Let's be straight here..we're not talking about what you or I perceive...but about what the media perceives.

You and I could come up with a list of names of Husker freshman that played right away, started, and did pretty decent throughout the year. The issue is, the media doesn't give our recruits as much attention in this respect as say...a Penn State team (obviously because Franklin is ZOMG ZEGREATEST EVAR).

That's the thing I'm discussing...not who started for us, when, and how much they contributed.
I really don't think there is much of a media bias. Whatever it is, it's backed by history. I really can't come up with a list of true freshman HS players that made an impact as a Husker. That's why I asked you. Maybe Tyler Moore? Rex has a decent freshman year, but nothing at the level of what we were talking in regards to these freshman when saunders commented about them not having played a down. They're pretty rare at Nebraska. As Landlord mentioned, Nebraska is not a place that depends on that superstar who comes in ready to play at 18. It's not a bias, it's a fact. Alabama, LSU, Florida, USC, Ohio State, etc - those teams have an impact freshman almost every season.
I'll jump in this and concur. I'm really testing my recall skills here and I just can't remember any recruits who brought in the nation-wide hype as someone who was gonna immediately transcend the team. I just cant come up with any. Even Suh didnt garner the attention. He emerged after getting here. We've never signed that top 5 player at one of the high-profile positions such as qb, wr, rb, LB and so on. MAYBEEEEE Harrison Beck?

I'm actually just talking about contributing at a high level as a freshman. Doesn't matter if they are 3* or 5*. Hyped or hiding under a rock. I can't recall many. Like you said, Suh didn't even really break out until a Junior. Tyler Moore possibly. Maybe Rex if you stretch your definition of high level. No true fresh QB has taken over. No WR has went for 800+. No RB for 1000+. No LBer making 1st or 2nd team conference. I'm having a hard time coming up with anyone. I'm sure there's some, but it's tough to think of.

Something I do wonder though is how many of our guys from the 90's wouldve garnered such attention had the media coverage been as extensive then as it is now.

DId we have any of the guys in the 90's playing as true freshman out of HS? Again, can't remember any. This would be a good research project for someone with WAY too much time on their hands.

Tommie Frazier. Lawrence Phillips. I know Ahman Green was highly touted before he even got his opportunity. Grant Wistrom played considerable snaps as a freshman. Ralph Brown. Erwin Swiney was pretty notable. He started as a true. keyou craver got lots of playing time as a true in '98. Bobby Newcomb started as wingback/PR after being a pretty prestigous signee if I recall. Correll Buckhalter got quite a bit of carries as a fresh in '97.

that's....

that's about it.

Of course, I'm not 100% sure ALL these guys were true freshman though. I'd have to check into it.

IMO, you'll see a 7-1, 6-2 winner out of the west from wither UW or NU.
Or Iowa. That schedule is cake.
This. Iowa gets their only 2 tough games at home. They could realistically be (probably should be) 10-0 and a top 20 team heading into the Wisconsin game. That is Another reason I think we may not be better than a 3 place in the division, the way our schedule stacks up against Iowa and Wisconsin.
so how good or bad we are is contingent on external factors? not the product we put on the field? we no longer dictate our destiny?
Never said that, but as Saunders rightfully pointed out, to ignore that we have a tougher slate than our division foes is ignoring reality. Much like ignoring the fact that this team is still young and inexperienced is ignoring reality. It's not unthinkable to think that we can win every game on the schedule, but realistically, I wouldn't bet on it. Reality sucks sometimes, and sometimes you have to realize it.

Oh. Forgot this gem.

DeAngelo Evans.
Good list there. Don't forget Kris Brown, Mike Brown and Matt Davison.
Thanks

One question. Did Mike Brown really get that much playing time as a freshman? I remember getting mop up duty for sure.

And of course Matt Davison. That's a big "duh" on my part.
Yes, Mike Brown got a lot of playing time as a freshman. He actually played out of position at CB. He started then for 3 years at safety. You got to remember that the defense they played was fairly simple. They ran 11 robber almost all the time. Basically this is a man free. All they needed was good man to man cover corners. for the most part.

You know. Harrison Beck did have an impact as a true freshman. He most likely saved the '05 season by completing a 3rd (or 4th was it?) and long and leading us to a game winning field goal against Kansas St in '05 after being inserted for an injured Zac Taylor. Without that win, we have to win @Colorado just to be bowl eligable. Imagine missing a bowl game 2 consecutive years. Thanks to Harrison.

Interesting thought, had this not happened, does Callahan get the axe first? Rather than Pederson?
