Ignoring the Obvious

Almost everyone on this board, and all talking heads said that if NU stopped the OU running game, and forced Thompson to pass, then NU would win. I even bought into that.

But OU didn't.

Why?

Because everyone in the country knows that NU is pathetically weak at CB, especially how they are set up. Sorry Cortney, it's not your fault totally. I take for granted that the NU coaching staff puts the best players available out there. I am certain Grixby tries his very best. He even makes some plays.

But when your DC insists on giving an 8 to 10 yard cushion, such as on 3rd and 2, the Huskers are just toast waiting to be eaten up.

The turning point in the game came when after two consecutive 3 and Os, OU is pinned on the 1/2 yard line.

Bang bang bang, nine plays and 99.5 yards later, OU has rolled up 99.5 yards passing, almost exculsively against the corners, and mostly against Grixby.

In my humble opinion, Coz simply does not have what it takes. the team played much better run defense this game but they didn't fix the flaw that is most obvious to anyone who has seen an NU game this year.

I love then Hukser and are very proud of what they accomplished this year, depsite the glaring weaknesses. I think BC has to move Coz out and get someone who know pass defense.

The Huskers are on the way back but won't really arrive until BC faces the obvious flaw and does something about it. Meanwhile, I look forward to the Cotton Bowl just because I can never get enough of Husker football.

I agree with you sort of.......

I don't think the cushion is the problem, hence the long touchdown pass where Suxby got burned by playing close.

I blame the coaching staff for keeping Suxby in the game. They know that he's there weakest link. And he's the 1 player that brings this whole team down. Put in Thenarse!!!! You have nothing to lose.

I'd rather have a freshman making mistakes than having a senior or a seasoned junior making those mistakes.

I would disagree because of the confidence factor that younger players have and how easily that can be damaged as opposed to a veteran's confidence. The coaches know more about how certain players will react to certain situations and if they are not playing the younger players, there is an obvious reason why.

...or........a young player learns from the mistakes and builds from there.

Because OU's Thompson stepped up and made the plays he had to. If you want to play man to man and press without a cushion, Thompson throws for 450 yards. OU is a very good team, we did what we had to, made them one dimensional. You guys have to remember, OU's WR's were all top of the line recruits and have continued to get better.

I'm not a coz fan AT ALL. that being said I dont think he did a bad job tonight. grixby is just BAD. to use one of my brothers favorite quotes "you cant make chicken salad out of chicken $h1t"

What do you suggest???OU's a great team......how many mistakes did there team make....how many turnovers?????????

I was happy with Coz last night...as it was said, you can't teach someone to be tall. Their running game was not there at all and Thompson made some pretty damn good plays last night. OU showed they are tough and can go to the passing game when their running game is not working.

Before you start putting complete blame on the DBs, I have one question: Where was the pressure from the front 4?

If we had acouple of good corners, we would have won that one, and at least one of the other losses. The lack of a good secondary is killing us. Cos didnt call a bad game. Grixby just cant cover his own shadow. Watch the Highlights(or lowlights) Every big play is on Grixby. Had that been, say, Bowman, I dont think those happen. A player breakdown has nothing to do with the play call.

I dont think our secondary lost us the game. It was our turnovers without them we would of had two more touchdowns and they would of had 1 less and we would have won.

Under most circumstances we would have won if we stopped their running game. But we did have a buch of turnovers and that really cost us. At least it was the best game plan we could of come up with. Remember, we were in this game. The sooners got screwed earlier in the season against Oregon. If not for that loss the sooners would be playing in the MNC game.

I understand the disgust with the secondary because it is horrible but let's look back for a minute. OU scored 2 TD's IMO the first one doesn't count it was a gift so in reality NU gave up 14 points we still only scored 7 set up by the D. I will say it again The D set the O up with great field position the entire 2nd half and it was continually pissed away.

Point fingers at cally for not using lucky until half way through the 4th quarter and not using the short passing game to set up the bombs downfield. The one thing that did bother me about the D was that carriker was a non factor and if he was being double teamed why wasnt ola,suh or cryer constantly blasting thompson into the dirt?

I think people are just frustrated because we're only a few key players away from a national championship caliber team. You're right, our defense only gave up 14 points against a very good sooner team. But we lose a whole lot of starters on defense after this season. It sure would be nice if our offense is firing on all cylinders against the tigers.

Something that impressed me was our tackling. Coaches must have worked on that a bit in practice, I dont think I saw any broken tackles. Shanley impressed me also he did a good job and what an effort to intercept the ball on that one where he didnt, he layed out for that one.

The defense was the highlight of the game to me................yeah the secondary sucked, but I've just come to grips with that so.............It was the offense that just couldn't get a damn thing going!!!! Usually it's the offense getting things done and looking at the defense like "Hello!!!! Do your job!!!," but it was the opposite of that on Saturday!!!!
