McKewon: NU offense not built for B1G Novembers; Bo’s defense stops pass, but not Badgers

Becks offense, green and strong in September, withers in the Big Tens November.

In NUs last four November road games, the offense has averaged 269 yards per game and 3.93 yards per play. Three of those games Saturday, at Penn State and at Iowa were played in miserable conditions.

Across all November games home or away, Nebraska averaged 346.8 yards and 4.88 yards per game in 2011, 404.5 yards per game and 5.39 yards per play in 2012, 357 yards per game and 4.79 yards per play in 2013, and 239 yards per game and 3.51 yards per play so far in 2014. Lets just say Taylor Martinezs wheels accounted for the 2012 spike. Without him in 2013 and 2014, NUs offense ranked in the bottom third of the Big Ten once November hit.

Becks offense doesnt really work in November. Pelinis base defense doesnt work against Wisconsin. Its an excellent pass defense. Among the best. Not against Wisconsins run game.

» 4.83: Yards per carry allowed by Nebraskas defense this season. Thats 98th nationally. Fresno State is 97th. The Huskers have given up 12 rushes of 30 yards or more. Thats tied for 112th with teams like Fresno, Rutgers and Illinois.

Bo is going to really find out this week what happens when you belittle the media nonstop and don't hold up your end of the bargain. .

The preseason concerns about the offensive line have been quite valid. It's been way too long since we've had consistent All Conference selections on the offensive line. Better hope those being redshirted, like Foster and Farmer are ready to step in immediately.

They. Have. To. Be. Coached.

Seriously, these kids aren't plug and play. The fact that you can't understand that is frightening.

Melvin Gordon’s speed and general brilliance did only part of the damage. Wisconsin’s backup, Corey Clement, would have dropped 300 yards. Omaha North’s Calvin Strong might have put up 200. Husker safeties weren’t stationed down in the box enough and didn’t play well once Gordon reached them. But did you watch the line of scrimmage? Did you see that? Wisconsin’s offensive line was a giant barge moving through pliant Husker waters. You could practically hear the Badgers’ foghorn through the snowy mist. Blargh! Gordon sweep! Blargh! Gordon inside zone run! Blargh! Tanner McEvoy zone read! Blargh!
The Sam I grew to admire because of his great writing is back. Nice to see the objective hat is back on.

I think changes will be made.

Without Taylor Martinez saving Bo's a$$, he'd have been canned a few years ago.
And the move to the Big Ten, Ameer's run against McNeese, A program legend vouching for him........
All 3 of those wouldn't have mattered with two to three 7 win seasons in from 2010 - 2012.
You toss us in the XII with Taylor and the exact same team in 11-12, it happens anyway. Rg3, Klein and ok st would have mudholed us.

This assessment by McKewon is so damn good.

It's probably the most concise way to sum up the issues on both sides of the ball.

Only thing I'd add - in seven years, we've yet to recruit an above average QB. Add that to McKewon's quote above in the OP, and that's about the sum total of it.

I really think TO's parting gift to Bo was getting us into the B1G. Most everyone put on their happy face when we first joined, but a few of us tried to remind everyone the B1G is still the same conference we've been making fun of for the past decade. The Urban Meyer hire by Ohio State is really the only thing done in the past 10-15 years to give this conference any credibility.
