Big Ten Running Backs/Papuchis quote

An article this week in Sports Illustrated about Melvin Gordon, but there is a side bar page about the 4 B1G running backs, Coleman from IU, Gordon, AA from Nebraska and Cobb from Minnesota. The quote that stood out was from none other than John Papuchis (talking about what it was like to practice against AA):

" In practice, we're tagging instead of tackling.....I don't know how many times we've actually tagged that guy"

There are so many directions we could go with that quote, we would need graphs and charts to keep track of everything.

I truly believe that he means tagging in the literal sense. As in, two hand touch to simulate tackling...........This really explains our defense......

I really don't think there's much to criticize here.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are pretty strict regulations about contact in practices and so on.

If that's the case, and I am not saying you are wrong in any sense, then why does it seem like Nebraska misses more tackles than anyone else in the country?

1's against 1's in practice has proven beneficial in the past...tagging and half pads sounds like an NFL practice to me. No wonder we missed more tackles than most any other team in the country it seemed

This makes sense. Was always hard to wrap my mind around our running-past-the-ball-carrier-or-quarterback-only-to-stick-a-hand-out-to-tag-him technique.
