It's off-season - let's play what if......

BC has us in the national picture again. Not only in media attention but in recruiting. Those are two things we were lacking prior to his arrival.

Most media had our program done long before Frank left.

But BC is doing the things necessary for a return. But it takes time. We may have a great year this year, we may not. I have always said it will take at least 5 years to really know if he is the man or not. I am leaning his way for sure. But too much expectation makes things worse when we do not reach the level some demand.

Again what if he goes 14-0, how long will it take for the what ifers to come back again.

I do not think BC is the type of person the Nutt job is. I think we have a some what hot headed Irishman on our hands, Iit worked before, I think loyal to a fault. No one wants this program to improve more than BC.

What if we give him the time to do the job, and what if we quit doubting everything he does.

What if.

What a stupid question.

Your the AD (which I know a lot of you out there think you could be), and Bill C wants a contract extension.

We have another "mediocre" season - either 9-5 or maybe even 10-4, but no Big 12 Championship and no win against marquee opponents (yes, yes, I know this is looking negatively at next season, and I DO NOT believe this will happen. But this is the "what if" game).

However, it looks like Bill C is going to pull of the Number 1 recruiting class in the Nation. In fact, far and away the number 1 class (maybe not just wishful thinking given our current committments).

Do you give him a big fat contract extension?
He gets the extension. The record isn't the determining factor. More to the point, though, is the recruiting. The reason Solich was fired was recruiting - or lack thereof. If Callahan pulls in the kind of class he looks like he's going to get, you don't fire him - especially if the record is no worse than last season. You sign him and you don't let other schools harm our recruiting by suggesting that the coach will be fired.

exactly, well said!

nope, not at all. although i have found plenty of fault with his coaching and will probably continue to be disappointed with his play calling from time to time, so far there is no reason to give him the boot.

good points.

"No one wants this program to improve more than BC."

I definitely agree with this statement - I don't think we could find anyone more dedicated to their profession, the kids on this team, their assistant coaches or the University in general.

"What if.

What a stupid question."

Well - this board - as all message boards - is nothing but what ifs. It is nothing more than a bunch of arm chair coaches, AD's, and commentators asking the what if question.

You all want to know our projections for next year - that is nothing but "what if's".

You all want to know what to do about this kid or that kid screwing up - nothing but "what if's" because you don't know what happened.

During the season it is nothing but what if this would have happened, what if that play would have been called, what if the ref would not have screwed up that call, what if, what if, what if.

I'm already hearing about the "what if" this or that recruit decommitts - come on, most of them have just committed and you are already going to condemn them for the transgression of past recruits? Also, each kid has to make up their own mind on where the best place for them to succeed is - they are only 16, 17, or 18 - they have and will change their minds.

What if may be a stupid question, but without what if then there would be no message boards. Oh, no, there still would be, it would be full of people talking about how their mother's, cousin's, brother's, best friend's, cable guy heard this or that about the program.

Graduation rates, clean program, and from the cellar to the pent house in recruiting.

He deserves the extension with out a doubt.

And I doubt he tries to rape the University with it. I truly think he is happy here. I think he is on his way to being every bit a Nebraskan as any before him. Not there yet, but the determination, dedication, loyalty seem to be there. I hate to wish away my life, but I sometimes wish we were ten years down the road and couple of NC's under his belt so all this " I'm not being negative crap would end.

There are a couple of GREAT reasons to grant him a contract extension immediately. He is keeping the tradition of graduating these young men and doing it the right way.

500,

We are not a top 10 program at this time. We do not have the talent, and mostly not the depth of talent to expect a BCS game.

Can we be a BCS team this year? I think it is a great possilbity. Only with absolutely no major injuries. But to demand it with an unpoven defensive line. Often injured, and in my mind over rated running backs, recievers that may prove to be adequate, but not earth shattering, and the best one may not even play a down, a QB that has never taken a snap in the offense seems just a little unrealistic. There are a lot of unproven/untested holes that must be filled.

I think BC will get it done, but I will not expect or demand anything until after next year. And then it will depend on who returns and who leaves early. Brandon hurt this team badly this year. I am not happy about his departure, I understand the reasons. But it hurt our chances of being a top ten program this year.

Did Stevie P actually get his own contract extension? I know Perlman gave him a vote of confidence. I'm sure once Stevie gets his own finances ironed out he'll be in position to dealing with giving an extension to Coach Callahan.

Ya gotta wait a least a yr. Lets see what happens this yr. Its not like we have been setting the world on fire yet. Ranked once in the last 3 yrs and barely at that. We need to see more improvement I think before we start talking extention. No NU coach has averaged 5 losses in his first 3 yrs going back to 1960. No matter who's recruits you had. At least a yr. Lose 5 again and you wait another yr too.

I think that you wait another year and see how things pan out. However, I think getting rid of Callahan at the end of his contract would be the biggest mistake the University could do. He has been recruiting well and we've been getting better and better every year. I think this year is the year that he finally gets that big win whether that's USC or Texas remains to be seen, but I think he'll get it. He's got his guys that he's recruited in there now and can really start doing things the way he wants to as far as play calling and the kid's abilities. I think you'll see a contract extension at the end of the year because a Big XII Championship win I think is in our near future. :w00t

Sug,

I really do not think BC is concerned about the extension. I think most on here are more concerned about it than he seems to be.

That being said, I think some need to look at the motto.

The wins are not where we all want them I agree, but the program overall is in better shape than I can ever remember it being. We are having very minor problems with behavior. Graduation rate appears to be on par with the best, accademics seem to be rising. Athletes are attending classes.

We have a "rules are to be obeyed" attitude. No special privledges for the more talented.

Positive comments from the press.

National acceptance of our recruiting ideas.

Respect for the honesty of the recruiting program.

To me, at this time, these points are just as important as the win/loss record. I think he gets the extension, because of all he has done for the program. I trust the wins will come. I do not want to see any more OK State games either. But I still do not believe we are on a level field with the SC's, Texas, Oklahoma, Auburn and a few others. Gaining ground on a daily basis, but still a few steps behind.

In honesty he has one of the toughest jobs in the country. We never have been a recruiting mecca. He still needs time and our support. The extension would give him confidence to. I have heard no one works harder, and it appears there is light at the end of the tunnel. Time to show him we appreciate all he has done in very hard job.
