Gerry is suspended for bowl game

You'd really have to try to get a 0.0 GPA with all the academic support you have in Lincoln as an athlete. There's only so much you can do for a kid. He has to want to help himself.

Agreed ... but if it is a 0.0 GPA ... you get this guy out of leadership, out of practices, off the field ... never in a game, etc. 0.0 to me means you fat, drunk and stupid ... and we don't bring in kids on scholarship to play football and not earn a degree. Not here to debate ... I just don't get it. I'm questioning the post more then anything at this point.

Couldn't agree with you more. Will be interesting to see if any more information comes out from his peers or from him. Staff won't be allowed to say anything.

It really is too bad, his give a damn was obviously busted. I do think it will cost him some money in the NFL as he will get a lower draft pick due to the lack of discipline.

 
That and supposedly Bankers' DC "recommendation" won't be strong. Not sure how much weight that carries, but I'd think as a potential owner that would be a ginormous red flag.

 
Gerry was a beast, and made a ton of plays for Nebraska. He will get his looks in the NFL but he isn't an elite prospect due to some physical limitations. Lamar Jackson? he could be an elite NFL prospect.

Clearly he thinks he's going to be an NFL star. Even before this happened I figured he might play a couple years as a 2nd or 3rd string player. For all of his good plays he makes too many mistakes.

And apparently passing a few Sociology classes is just too hard for him to bother with and a waste of time since he's gonna be the next Troy Polamalu and doesn't need a backup plan.

My guess, since he wasn't suspended for any games in the 2nd half of the season, is Riley doesn't require the players to get midterm report cards. As much as I support him letting the players be in charge of their own lives, it would be really easy to have them do this.

This is another area Pelini doesn't get near the credit he should. Academics. He stressed them and did monitoring and classroom checks.

Nebraska has a strong history of academic All Americans, long before Riley or Pelini.

Riley got a bowl game thanks to Pelini stressing academic accountability.

........and we even get to listen to Eichorst talk about Riley's "leadership"......

As for Gerry and his grade point average. ALL the BLAME is on HIM!!! He is the one that has to put in the effort. If he really got a 0.0 GPA, then he quit on himself and his team, no support, coaching, or tutoring would have changed that fact. Stop blaming MR because it isn't his fault, it is getting really sicking to keep hearing that the coaches and the coaches that BS!!

When did it become acceptable to get a 0.0 GPA, when did in become okay to let your team down? He was a F'ing SENIOR, starting Safety for the greatest collage football team. ITS THE COACHES FAULT, ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!! WHO are these idiots on this forum. Where did PRIDE, DEDICATION, HARD WORK go?

Mike Riley shouldn't have to watch Gerry he's not a damn child. Not to mention he has unlimited resources. If you don't want to work in the classroom you can go back home simple as that. It's part of being a student athlete.

Every single aspect of the players ultimately falls on the head coach.

If the head coach doesn't know a player......and a captain at that.....isn't fulfilling academic requirements, that falls on the coach. It also falls on Riley for playing him during an ENTIRE SEMESTER that he wasn't fulfilling his classroom obligations.

Agreed.

So how did this become news in December instead of October? That's on Riley and team leadership.....which is ultimately Riley.
