What did we learn

I learned that if it wasn’t for really bad officiating the offense scores two to three more TDs and the final score is 42-10 or something along those lines. If that would’ve happened nobody is complaining about the offense. 
 

I also relearned that this defense is borderline elite. Few teams will hold Colorado to 10 points and the defense again will keep this team in most games. If the offense continues to improve this team could be dangerous in a month from now

 
Rhule could become one of the best coaches in college football.

I liked how - post game broadcast interview - Rhule shutdown the criticism about penalties/sloppiness in second half. Until new information is presented to me, I believe he defended his players by discretely calling out questionable officiating, at the same time praising a much needed win for players - and fans.
 

Offensively, It was an ugly 2nd half. Still some work to do on that side of the ball, but that’s being nit picky. The offense missed a few plays by inches, get those down and it’s 2 more scores, at least. 

Rhule wishing the Sander’s boys well over injuries is suuuuch low key shade - loved it. 

 
Oh, Buschini played a great game and I don't think he had a bad punt(?) Part of the pick 6 was because of him.

DR is a better runner than I thought. No he is not a dual threat QB, but he showed some wheels on that first-down run. 

 
Some assessment bullet points per my perspective:

• Thus far, the focus on limiting turnovers has actually worked, much to the confusion of snakebit traumatized NU fans

• I like our offensive balance and creativity, getting different players the ball in different ways

• Dante is a nasty dude. On one play he got to the second level and rather than try to avoid the secondary player, he just ran RIGHT at him. I don't know if it was the same play or not, but I've never in my life heard of someone breaking a forearm from getting hit by a runningback.

• Dylan is savvy and has a great grasp of the offense, but has also gotten lucky more than once and it won't happen forever. Great kid and player though, love that the moment wasn't too big for him or for anyone else.

• I don't think our second half playcalling was nearly as conservative as it seems like it was. Despite their lack of success, CU's defense (especially front 7) was playing physical as hell, and in the second half, they started having success stuffing the run. We also still took a decent amount of shots down the field, and had some plays break open, only for flags and/or sloppy execution to get in the way. While we were more conservative in the 2nd than the 1st, it seemed like the brakes on the offense were much more of an execution problem.

• I actually thought this game might come down to Dylan's legs if it was close. I was wrong, but was at least glad to see that he has it as a tool to take off on man coverage on 3rd down.

If ANYONE, is "meh" about this win, because of 2nd half O, just stop. 

Takeaways:

1) Our D is on point.

2) Our coaches know our D is on point.

3) We have players on O.

4) Our O design is ridicoulsy artistcly awesome.

5) Deion is more about making his kid making  $ then he is about his team winning.

Minus the overall ridiculous calls in this..and as a ref, I hate saying officials impact a game...they did.

This was a 42-10 game, from start to finish.

 
(1) what a good QB can do for a team. Although second half was disappointing, Raiola played smart, did not turn the ball over, and managed the clock very well.

(2) Ty Robinson is a BEAST.

(3) Bullock and Barney played great and are very promising this season

(4) Dowdell runs with purpose and held on to the ball really well today. He and Rahmir complemented each other very well

(5) our special teams continue to be non-special and they are a huge liability. They are the weakest link for this team. There will be several close games this season where special teams will be the difference and our non-special teams are a concern. It is sad that we have not had decent special teams for almost a decade now.

(6) penalties negated several excellent plays. Getting penalized 13 times in a game is not a good sign. Will we ever learn to stop committing so many untimely penalties?

Overall, this game was a litmus test and I feel the team passed even with the uninspired play of our offense in the second half. I feel they relaxed and thought they had the game in hand. Our defense played lights out and is the reason why the 28 points were enough to win. Very good sign so far and it is great to see a 19 year old play with such poise and calm. Hopefully, this year is when we turn that corner and get the bowl absence monkey off our backs.

In Jr High football a runningback broke their forearm trying to stiff-arm me.  It sounded like a dozen pencils snapping.

But yes, Dowdell is a baaaaad man.

Only way  he stays is if somehow we make the playoffs and come close to winning it all and he feels we have the tools to win it all next year.   Thats not happening so he's taking the head coaching job that fits him 

 
I've learned a lot of posters here don't recall the last couple of years. Who cares that the O didn't do much in the second half.  

A: they didnt turn the ball over

B: they didn't put the defense in bad positions

C: had a bad bounce go their way for the first time in forever (tipped pass to Rahmir)

 
The second half was tough, but it will give the team both good and bad examples to learn from this season.  Despite drive and momentum killing penalty calls, we didn’t mentally implode and give them anything easy.  It was not domination like the first half, but securing the win, still a very decisive win, is more important.
