We needed to build with top lineman, not a 5 star QB or flash receiver. While that is important, one player is not winning games in Big 10 play. The fact we really do not put OL in the NFL says it all. Go get the coaches that put lineman in the NFL and are still hungry to compete. We lack identity and that can be an equalizer if we recruit for a system, not well we got a few guys on each side of the ball.

Was a student at UNL from 96 to 2003. Witnessed the high and the feeling of invincibility and then the start of the free fall to mediocrity. Never imagined it would last two plus decades with no end in sight and 8 years of no bowl appearances.

I wish someone would explain to me how 5 coaching staffs later, we are still getting Top 25 talent recruited each season and still losing after 20 years of hiring and firing coaches. Read between the lines, this program is not attracting talent and the rankings are not being completely telling. It has to be or how could we not hit on at least one coaching staff in the last 20 years. We keep blaming all the coaches for the same ineptness and being bad coaches, while I think that is with some truth, but our recruiting rankings are inflated to a point that leads this towards failure more. I have not seen a talented team here for years. If we truly were getting Even Top 50 talent, surely winning 6 games in a season would not be that hard. K-State and Kansas never hardly reach above Top 40 for classes and they can each make bowl games in back to back seasons on occasion. Do you see the same type of players on the field as you see on either one of those teams from A to Z? Eye test should tell you something.........Banks and Neyor haven't seen the end zone or ball that much since Big 10 play started? Dowdell is a beast and our staff won't give him the ball unless were down 3 scores? He was not good enough to play at Oregon? Talent is the biggest issue with this program.

Before the season started I definitely said on this board that "we should do less of the big sets and line up in 11 man more because that'll fit with Raiola's passing ability and give us more big play capability."
We proceeded to actually do that down the stretch here, and it seems like Raiola wasn't ready for it. It just hasn't looked good in the past several games.
And then the staff waits until we're down 13 points to consistently line up with a lead blocker in the run game and try to grind out first downs with the run. I'm honestly just really confused about what the staff sees during the week that leads them to line up in the shotgun and throw without trying to establish the run first.
I was wrong about multiple things heading into this one. We just can't run well with Dowdell unless he has a lead blocker a lot of the time.

He didn’t call plays lol. Reid calls the plays. This is common knowledge. He taught the offensive scheme..yes. But he did not call plays. You know maybe the most massive thing the OC does lol

Amen! That's what built this program in the early years. We had NFL linemen on both sides of the ball. We had on occasion some great skill position players that made NFL careers, but overall we had talent that fit our program. We had great running backs that fit our program. We had TE's that fit our program and on occasion were good enough to play NFL. Rarely did we have NFL Qb's. College football is about program and how the program does. Saban built a dynasty at Bama based on the same prinicipals as Osborns Huskers had. Sure he had some great QB's but really none of them were elite NFL players in the early stages. Build the lines and the players will come.......

I complained about this after Colorado. The inability to score in the 2nd half. Some on the board said it wasn't an issue. We were winning, developing etc....Rhule said some coach speak about teaching the guys to win, protecting the lead etc....Then I quickly realized what I was seeing was what I was seeing. This O can't score in the 2nd half. Satt can't adjust after the half. We didn't play aggressive or put our foot on their throat because this staff is incapable of doing this.....They don't know how to crush a team.. And it shows. No killer instinct. No fire. No urgency. It sucks. We got sold a bill of goods with this coach and staff. I'll support Rhule if he lets some people go after the end of the year, if not forget it.

Satterfield called fewer screens & swing passes in this one. We had a pass to the flat that looked great when Raiola rolled out on the play because it drew in a defender. We another complete dud of a swing pass to Fidone (that has hardly worked all year).
They asked Raiola to air it out in this one and he just wasn't finding the open man off the snap.
It's crazy how bad we are on offense down the stretch.

"They did a good job early on of coming out, bringing four guys in the B-gaps and bringing the free safety behind. Some of the mechanisms we have to handle that are the screen game, and our gapping it up, and trying to throw the ball down the field." Everyone on the board knows Satts offense.....Screen pass (check), run the ball straight up the a$$ in the B gap and YOLO.....Every team with a pulse has stopped us in all facets of "our mechanisms to handle this"
But I think in general in the passing game, when it came to converting third downs, they were just all out zero blitzing us, and we weren’t answering it the way that you need to. We finished the game like 9-17 on third down. In the first half at one point it was one for a lot. We struggled, made the adjustment early, got it kind of finally taken care of in the second half..
We were not answering the zero blitz. This is basically every defender w/out a "body to account for" just pins their ears back and blitzes. So every eligible player is now basically in a one on one situation. Very risky for the D. At one point Raiola was 3-10....Satt had no plan to beat this zero blitz. None.
The key to people has been wearing them down in the fourth quarter. That game was a carbon copy of their Minnesota game where Minnesota got the ball back and went down the field. They just made one more play to win the game. Unfortunately, Heinrich (Haarberg) makes the fourth down stop. We get down there and we take a penalty and we lose time and we don’t make the plays.” As someone had mentioned earlier, Rhule coaches/schemes/plays to have games come down to one play in the 4th quarter. I think he just wants to/hopes to keep it close and hope a play or penalty goes his way....Not a killer instinct. No gas and all brakes. All bark and no bite....
