*** Husker FB Misc Topic bullsh#t Thread ***

A couple months ago, CBS did a list of the 15 worst hires of the past decade. Now they've made another list: 25 worst hires this century. Bill Callahan and Scott Frost were both given a "just missed the cut" dis-honorable mention.

23. Mike Riley, Nebraska

Record: 19-19

The record itself isn't as bad as another Nebraska coach (Scott Frost) who just missed making this list. But when you fire a coach in Bo Pelini who won at least nine games seven consecutive years, you better nail the replacement. Nebraska decided the guy to improve the program was one who had won nine games only once in the preceding five years and had a 12-13 record over the previous two seasons. It wasn't the slam dunk hire Nebraska needed to justify dumping Pelini, and the lackluster results shouldn't have surprised anyone. Riley had one nine-win season in 2016 but he started the Cornhuskers' decline that led to an improbable eight-year bowl drought for a program that won three national titles in the 1990s.

Crazy to think that about 20 years ago, Clemson was pretty lame.

It is amazing what a winning FB team can do for a school.

And on the flip side, a crap FB program can really beat the crap out of a school.

My HS friend went to Indiana for college. Him and his friends never went to the games. For years he lived about a mile away from the stadium and he said you really could not even notice the difference between a game day and a non game day.

My neighbor growing up went to the U of Illinois (Just like Joel almost had to do in Risky Business). He NEVER mentioned anything about football Saturday.

The Athletic's 'All-Geezer Team' of older players still milking their covid bonus year eligibility includes one Husker and one ex-Husker.

QB: Jeff Sims, Arizona State

First season of college football: 2020

It’s hard to believe the former three-year Georgia Tech starter and (brief) Nebraska savior has been in college for only six years.

Sims was the Yellow Jackets’ starter from the first game of his true freshman season but never built on his early promise. After three years there, Matt Rhule tapped Sims to be his first Nebraska quarterback, but he managed to commit six turnovers in his first two games and lost the job. He backed up Sam Leavitt during the Sun Devils’ Big 12 title run last season and opted to return for the same role in 2025.

OL: Turner Corcoran, Nebraska

First season of college football: 2020

Corcoran, a former top-100 recruit, was the highest-rated member of Scott Frost’s 2020 recruiting class. He became a mainstay at left tackle for 30 straight games, of which an estimated 23 were excruciating one-score losses decided by Huskers special-teams miscues.

Injuries cut short his 2023 and 2024 seasons, so he took a redshirt last season and will suit up this fall for Nebraska’s 18th straight “this could be the year.”

"Most Safeties Surrendered"

I realize that list is from 2000 but the mere mention of the word "safety" brings back the painful nightmare of our '96 game vs Arizona State. We gave up 3 safeties in that game. God that was an embarrassing and painful loss.
