Rhule to Penn State?

More general discussion around Rhule: He's not going to do any major coaching of the actual team. He's not going to wear an OC hat or a DC hat. And he has said verbatim since he's been here "I'm not a big X's & O's guy."

Which was surely meant to be a modest statement more than anything - but still. Rhule is a football CEO, and in my opinion he's a really great one.

He's a great motivator. He's a great leader. He's got a charismatic personality that galvanizes a program in a good way. And he has a masters degree in educational psychology.

But he's really only going to be as good as his coordinators.

Now, I think Holgorsen could take an offense to a national championship game, given the right talent. Butler though? He's really unproven.

So, he'd have to be setup with top-tier coordinators for the PSU job to make any sense at all, IMO.

Why would Penn St. fire a $50 million dollar coach to hire a worse version of that coach? I wonder what percentage of our fan base would have traded Rhule for Franklin prior to the season?

A big part of the reason is to keep NIL and booster spending but it just doesn’t make sense to me.

They will swing bigger than Rhule. It just comes down to who they can land.

Well that's kind of the wild card in all of this because it doesn't really make sense for Rhule to be PSU's primary target right now, but the primary reason Rhule would go to PSU is if that is indeed his dream job. Rhule would be willing to go through all the headaches of changing jobs, relocating, etc., if it just meant more to him. People do that kind of stuff all the time.

Otherwise, it doesn't really make a lot of sense for either party. The only reason Rhule is being mentioned right now is because of his ties to Pat Kraft and PSU. It has very little to do with his actual resume IMO.

Really? He even cited Oregon and Dan Lanning, saying how they're playing to win and we need to do the same, yet the sentiment has been "That's not really the Nebraska way." We need more $$$ for NIL if we want to be able to land elite players. Seemed pretty obvious to me.
Why would he pander for NIL at Nebraska if he's going to Penn State?

Well, what fans want or what they'd entertain as hypotheticals is probably fairly different from what a university's AD & admin staff would do. Because fans don't actually feel/experience the financial obligations of it, nor do they really even know exactly what's on their school's balance sheet in terms of cash flow, liabilities, all of that.

Nevertheless, I agree with your first question there. And that kind of pains me because obviously I want to believe at least that Rhule is an amazing coach.

I think that he probably is amazing, but he just hasn't actually stayed around at a school long enough to actually go on a run to make the playoffs (even though the 12 team playoff wasn't a thing at Baylor).

Because he has leverage to do so.. He may feel that the NIL commitment that nebraska has adhered to won't get what he wants to accomplish done. If Nebraska is unable or unwilling to pony up, then that makes his decision to move on easy.. 🤷‍♂️

This is my read. The former player/friend of the AD make it an easy target for the media. And it wouldn't be shocking if Rhule still considers that somewhat of a dream job.

But I doubt he's in the top group. For sure not until the booster know they struck out on a few other guys. Of course, the guys they are likely swinging for makes it pretty likely the will strike out a few times.

Exactly. Seems to me like he sees a place to use some leverage and is going to make the most of it. Until you know you're not leaving, do everything you can to make your current situation better.
