I'd personally push back on that characterization because the implications are coming more from Penn St's side of the fence.
They fired a coach with a 70% winning percentage, consistent top 12 finishes, several New Year's Six bowl wins, a conference title, and a CFP semi-final appearance. That move signals a desire to go beyond just being very good and clearly feeling like they should be winning national titles.
The idea they'd turn to a coach who hasn't shown sustained success at any stop and has an abysmal record against ranked teams doesn't align with that ambition. Rhule's ties to Kraft and PSU aren't enough to override the expectations that just cost Franklin his job IMO.
So, it isn't really that some Husker fans are being insecure or implying Rhule isn't that good of a coach for Nebraska. It's because the hype feels built more upon convenience and lazy connections than on fit or logic. And I think the PSU fan base's overwhelmingly negative feelings toward Rhule's name being mentioned are indicative of this.
Exactly, I know coaches love to tell us how they are shaping young men and blah blah blah, and some of us fall for it (part of the reason I liked Bo so much is that everything he said that was leaked to the public is what all those coaches say all the time in private)
But those coaches are just like us, they are normal everyday guys that totally toss out some BS.
As someone that has coached FB for 20 years...Bo is in the nice category. If your premise is that Bo Pelini wasn't any different from other passionate football coaches and normal folks like us, you're wrong. He was worse.
Hey, you're the one who keeps bringing up Bo Pelini.
I agree and one thing we have to remember is that while we are passionate fans...this is their job and career.I think Rhule is handling this really well. People think him not outright denying it or saying no is a smoking gun, but we all know that isn't the case.
At the end of the day, even if he definitively says, "I will not be taking the Penn State job and I am staying at Nebraska no matter what", you can't entirely trust it, because we have countless examples of that being a lie.
Does that mean he's for sure staying? No. I have no idea what he'll do. But he's a great and savvy communicator, and he's shown in word and action his commitment as far as anybody could possibly hope for, and if he does leave, I'll respect and understand it, and appreciate that he wasn't lying to my face, and continued to be a great supportive representative and cheerleader for our program until he was gone.
I thought I heard 20 million or so from Sipple & Sean Callahan going into this year.Cignetti is making 8.3 million. Indiana's roster is around 30 million. All from Radio talk.
What is Nebraska's roster worth?
I am of this opinion as well. I do think Rhule is a builder and if given enough tools, ie MONEY, he could build a championship caliber team here. So far, Rhule has proven to be a restorer of programs but hasn't been anywhere long enough to say with confidence that he can build a championship team. Yes, if he had more money, we'd probably had a better OL and RBs and DL. All critical gaps in the current team (except for EJ - who I think would be elite behind a better line).I think the narrative that Rhule isn't good enough is interesting. He hasn't stayed anywhere long enough to really know. My feeling is that he is doing the right things to build a championship level program. I believe if he had top 5 roster money, he would get it done here or at PSU. I'm hoping it's here.
