Iowa - What Did We Learn

I said it in another thread. If I am coach. I have 2 staff members that do nothing other than watch film of lower D1 andD2 players that have proven themselves and have potential and most importantly look hungry to win and get paid. With the portal no point recruiting freshman. They will just simply leave There a tons of players that have either been passed over or simply didn’t develop until they reached a lower level. Find them. I remember when Nebraska played Wyoming against Allen and just kept thinking “ how is this kid not at Nebraska and is playing at Wyoming”
We legit already have staff members dedicated to doing this as their full time job in the recruiting and scouting department. Just like everyone else.

This program needs to adopt the iowa bloodbath style of practice during the week. Physicality needs to be the mainstay of which we are known for. We will suck until we figure this out.

This makes me reflect on the Minnesota loss and Rhule commenting how coaches weren’t taking practice week seriously. I don’t have the words to express how alarming that was but it was a glaring quote.

I don’t think that Butler is below average. I think he’s average.

But those rushing stats say so much.
I think Butler is crap. I hate the NFL defensive mentality in the way he structured this defense(said it watching the Cincy game and ever since), however, this defense looks slightly more coherent complimented with an offense that can sustain drives.

Problem 1a is the OL. Yes one can point at the rush yards today, but once again it is fools gold of EJ generally making guys miss at the LOS and being the back he is afterwards. He made this line look far better than they are in most games.

Problem 1b is front 7 on defense. One unit looks better/worse than the other based on how other said unit plays. The 3 man front is ONLY gonna work in this league if your NG is a MAN. Eating doubles and stalemating the middle of the OL EVERY play. DEs need to look like Ty. Hold the edge not get buried. Both of these things never occurred all year. TVP looked the part two years ago and has digressed so much. LBs need to be erasers in this philosophy. Fly around. Shavers looked the part at the end of last year and nothing like the same players this year. One OLB needs to be like JoJo Domann was. Can cover and line up on the line and not get destroyed. Thought McCullough was the dude, injuries derailed his season.
If you had the dudes, this defense could work in theory in this conference. When you don't have the dudes, which any coach worth a salt can see very early on, you swallow your pride and adjust your defense to the players you have. You can do this while still incorporating what you totally envision your defense down the road. And of course when it seems not plausible and not going to work in the current landscape, you man up and change(ala Charlie McBride)

This off-season should be called no pussys. Anyone who doesn’t want to work hard should be cut from this program. Coaches and players alike starting with Rhule. No more Texasing podcasts. No more fuckin lip service. No more puss football!! Physicality should be the name of the damn game. No more 3-3-5.

If Nebraska wanted to fire Matt Rhule it would have cost $49-million guaranteed.

But because Dannen gave Rhule an extension that guaranteed money now would be $71-million.

Just a really inexcusable extension on Troy Dannen's part. Matt Rhule had not earned that extension yet, and now Nebraska is stuck...again.

The scheme is so stupid for the players they have. They have no NT. There are a bunch of DEs that are trying to play DT and outside linebackers playing 3-4 DE.

Could go thru everybody on the d line but look at what they have done with Nwaneri. He’s an athletic freak and they have him trying to eat up blocks like a 315 lb Ty Robinson. He should be a 4-3 DE or playing outside linebacker.

There is no true MLB, just undersized outside linebackers getting engulfed by lineman and then everybody blames the backers.

It’s the land of misfit toys.
