Iowa - What Did We Learn

@BigRedBuster Riley played these non conference teams:
2015:
BYU
S. Alabama
Miami
S. Mississippi

2016:
Fresno State
Wyoming
Oregon

2017:
Arkansas State
Oregon
N. Illinois

That's zero FCS schools, and 4 power conference schools for Riley. Rhule has now played 2 FCS schools, and 3 power conference schools. So yes, that's not as many lower tier schools.

Yep!

AD's also have to stop falling for this idea that other schools don't have weight rooms and computers. People did it with Riley and with Rhule, they acted like Oregon State and Baylor were working up in the janitors closet on a Bowflex. "Once ___________ gets to use the resources that NU has to offer, watch out!"

Every team in the country is doing this. I might be wrong on the # here, but for example, I was told this season every P4 team is extensively scouting Fre playing over 150 snaps at lower level schools with production.

Yes, completely agree. Baylor actually has a lot of money and resources. Also a newer stadium. The big thing was having Texas HS talent to recruit. We do not have a footprint for recruiting in or with in the Big 10 footprint. To this day, 15 years in the conference, we do not have a state or area where we can go in and nab or steal recruits away from other Big 10 schools. This is why I feel Rhule will never get it done here. I was under the impression that he had some ties to HS coaches in Texas and that this would help with recruiting. I have not seen this come true yet. This why we should have hired a relevant college coach when we hired Rhule. He had to start all over with creating ties and relationships for recruiting. I don't think that he has done that and thinking he won't. Kansas ST's best TE is from Columbus. Iowa St's best TE is from Nebraska......that creates depth, those players also might become the next Jurgens as well.......were missing on talent from every angle.
 
I've yet to see this team improve over the course of a season & I'm not sure who you are pointing to as your core for next season. I'm not optimistic that bodes well for a "development coach". I don't care what they do in the portal, there are a lot of players headed into their 2nd & 3rd season that need to make quantum leaps for this team to be relevant next season.

I will admit EJ finished his career as a dramatically better player than I ever thought he had the talent to be.

I cringed at you throwing out credentials at the end there.

Our running back rushed for 217 yards. Their entire team rushed for 213. So your argument then is that if our offensive line was significantly better, we'd what? That Emmet would have rushed for like 325 and made up for the 38 points that our defense gave up?

It's just a bad argument.
 
On one hand I think we need to move on from Rhule. Then I look at current coaches and really can't identify a good fit for here. I don't see a sure fire up and comer who looks the part. This season is not the season to be in the market. LSU, Florida, Auburn, Penn St are more attractive based on recent successes. Maryland, Arkansas and UCLA are or could be decent jobs. Nebraska would be somewhere in the middle of those jobs. Not to mention that more jobs will be coming open after this weekend. I think Nebraska is in the mix, but not like LSU, etc. Its been 28 years since a national title. If you were watching football then and know about the tradition, your in your 40's now or older. Younger coaches don't view this place like that.
 
I just hate that college football coaches' contracts are based on past results and not current results. That doesn't fly at any serious company where pay & merit is performance-based.

These guys get these insane contracts based on past performance. Then we give Rhule an extension before figuring out whether or not he's really making any progress by seeing how year three fully plays out.

It's just exhausting.

We need to bring in a top tier defensive line coach and get serious with our front seven. We need one decent behemoth-sized nose tackle and one decent linebacker out of the portal - a guy who can actually fight through the pack for a tackle in the run game.

And we sure as hell need a great running back out of the portal because there's nobody on the roster right now that can come close to matching Emmett's production for next year.

I would be ready to move on if Rule isn’t willing to make major changes. If he is willing, I think it’s best to keep him.
