Iowa - What Did We Learn

I witnessed all that. It was hard for many years listening to "Osborne can't win the big one - NU's offense is a dinosaur - Can't beat faster teams like Florida State & Miami." It was hard to hear because it was mostly true at the time. I think the fan base got a scare when TO considered getting out of the unrealistic expectations here and going to Colorado, and the fans backed off a little bit on the super harsh critiques.

I like Rhule much better than any coach we've had post-Solich. I think he's open to making changes where he sees a need to & he's demonstrated that. I'd love to see Rhule coach here for many more years and see where he can take this program.
I have never been into the "liking" part, for me it is wins or losses and that is it. These coaches are like a worker at a store, they either did a good job for me or they didn't. I don't care about liking them.

Rhule seems like a great guy but I am guessing BC and Riley and Frank and Bo are all great guys too.

I don’t know how anyone could blame the players. It’s not like they woke up this season and said I want to suck
Players are basically professional now and deserve whatever criticism they get. As long as it’s not overboard or gets personal.

I mean I don’t think the coaches coached Wright to not break don and totally whiff on one of the easier sacks possible. Or for D. jones to get planted on his back by a QB when trying to tackle him for a loss. Or Guthrie to hang out in the end zone until the QB has almost scored before he decides to not even try to get through a RB’s block. Or for Guthrie to get toasted on a double move by a TE of all people for a TD. Maybe I’m wrong though and that’s how our defense if supposed to go🤷‍♂️

Point at this diagram where Pelini hurt you.

I think this is the part that has taken the most adjusting for fans. Although they are still "kids," many of them are paid at least 3-5x what an average fan makes in a year. That doesn't make criticizing 18-23 year olds the right thing to do, but it certainly is understandable.

They also don’t roster themselves. What a terrible look to feel entitled to puke on a guys because your feelings are hurt. If you’re going to be a fan, have some dignity

And most don’t get paid much.

How would you pitch them?
Try this: hey guys, do you want to leave a HC that is killing it and showing the country how you can win in day one and come join my staff who get outmatched and outclassed because I am all talk and no substance but outstanding in podcasts. If that does not work, offer them twice their salary.

So Frank was the last coach to win more than lose against ranked teams says a lot. The past is the past, but we keep making the same mistakes, repeating the past. What's sad is we keep thinking its going to change with each hire. Thinking that NIL would level the field some was a mistake because those who bent the rules then are still just better at it now. Money is now free of rules, and those who have always bought players are just better at it. Putting a cap on NIL will just make things worse because the private money will still free flow into programs and pay players. These super conferences are going to keep getting stronger and call the shots. ESPN runs college sports, and own all the rights to the SEC. Their media bias has controlled college football now for 15 years. Were not the sexy story or pick to be back to a power program. That would be the last thing ESPN would want and the Big 10

Wonder what the tune will be if we win our bowl game. If we get 8 wins I will count it as passable/acceptable. But an array of changes need to be made including personnel and staff changes alike.

Bowl games these days depend on who all transfers/declares for the draft and who does not for teams. 1 more win than last year with this weak schedule is not an improvement.

I keep reading and agree, but its stated we need someone who knows the Big 10. I would also counter that and say we someone who knows the SEC. That conference has more drafted players each year than any other conference. Harbaugh studied Alabama and Georgia his last few seasons and started beating Ohio St every season after that. He also had several players go on to the NFL. Harbaugh developed his players and roster each season. What were missing right now. Most good programs still develop HS talent and recruit them more heavily. I don't know how or where we stack up in what's the best route. HS or portal additions?

I actually said to myself today “if Rhule could win this Iowa game, I’d ignore my concerns”. They didn’t. I don’t care about the bowl. This season was/is trash.

Ek showed us what good coaching can do. Rhule got an extension and people are already calling for him to make staff changes. That’d be his 3rd staff. These are the guys the “program builder” picks. Ek was identified by Will Compton.

I have no confidence in Rhule at this point. I hope he can turn it around because we are stuck with him and I don’t think I can hang on much longer. I’m 46 years old and I skipped 2 games this year in protest. Sounds lame and dramatic but I’m just tired of it. I feel like we are being taken advantage of as loyal fans.
