2025 College Football Playoff Rankings

I agree that Alabama should have been left out but ND 10 game run wasn't exactly against a great schedule. In the end I really believe they are being punished a bit for not being in a conference. It sounds like there may be more of that on the horizon with teams stating they aren't going to schedule them since they get a free pass into the playoff under certain circumstances. I personally love that... ND needs to be in a conference if it wants to compete against other conference teams in a playoff.
Guess I won't spare you 😊
The ACC contract through 2036 says that if we join any conference in football it has to be the ACC. That would actually lower our strength of schedule because SC, Navy are better than the average ACC team.

SC is one of the schools saying it won't play you in the future. Navy historically is a weak team... I'm fine with them joining the ACC.

I thought what SC said is they will play them but it has to be in the first month when most of the non-con games are. But I suppose if they can't agree on a date that would effectively kill it.

In all the freeze out reports, Texas and USC were the two schools listed the most. However, no direct quote was ever listed from USC that I could find.

USC didn't call out Notre Dame specifically (although they have removed them from their 2026 schedule on their web page), but they basically said they want to move their non-con games to September.

Though she did not explicitly mention Notre Dame, it was impossible to read the statement on future nonconference scheduling from USC athletic director Jen Cohen and not think about the future of the series between the Irish and the Trojans.

On Friday, Cohen put out a statement to reporters stressing that future scheduling decisions would be based on “what is best for the success of our football program.” The future of the series with Notre Dame has been a hot-button topic for months. Cohen said Friday that USC wants to play nonconference opponents at home “as early as possible every year.”

This year, the Trojans played Notre Dame in South Bend on Oct. 18. Last year, the two teams met in Los Angeles on Nov. 30.

Notre Dame, which has won 7 of the last 8 games in the series, has played USC on or after Oct. 12 every year since 1926, when the first meeting between the 2 schools took place.

“USC is the only team in the Big Ten to play a nonconference road game after Week 4 in either of the past 2 seasons. USC is also the only team to play a nonconference game after Week 4 in both seasons,” Cohen said in her statement. “Intentionally making our road to the CFP significantly more difficult than our Big Ten peers does not align with our goal to win championships.”

Cohen mentioned that USC is the only FBS program to have never played an FCS opponent. She said USC wants to play “meaningful” games and will continue to schedule at least one power conference opponent outside of Big Ten play.

“If that opponent is a rival with whom we share a long and storied tradition, all the better,” Cohen said.

I believe that was released prior to the announcement that Notre Dame was going to get preferential treatment in future years regarding the playoff. I could be wrong though.

That's probably right. I hadn't seen that USC took umbrage with that.

Is SOS still used? I think we need to go back and use these metrics.

Heck, let AI figure it out.

I am not saying ND needs to join a conference, but if they don't, they don't have any control over what a bunch of old people think who sit in a room and think about their glory days.

I wonder if playing in RD 1 is more beneficial than having a bye week. ?

Or at least, if it is more of an advantage when playing in the 2nd round vs someone that had another bye week?

Last year It helped tOSU and ND in the 2nd round (and again as they eventually went on to play in the championship game). Oregon looked flat against tOSU and ND beat Georgia.

And this year it helped Oregon, Miami and Ole Miss. It did not help Alabama. Although many people questioned a 3 loss team getting in. Indiana was way better than them, And Bama finished the year with 4 losses.

I am just curious. But it feels like there is an edge to play in the 1st round to dust off the cobwebs and get back into a week to week rhythm.

It's only been 2 years, but 7/8 is a pretty telling #.
