Now if this report from 810 is true this is my theory of thought.

The Big10 is trying to force ND hand and will be expanding to 16 teams. If all four of these teams join the Big10 they will only need to add 1 more team to get to 16. If ND turns the offer down the Big10 will then pluck 2 more teams from the Big East thus dismantling the Big East and leaving the rest of ND athletic programs eating sh!te.

The cards to ND's future lay in their hands. Do they swallow their pride and join the Big10? Or does their pride and stubborness to adapt get in the way and they turn the offer down, in turn screwing the other programs that the Big East graciously let play in their conference?

If anybody has the power to make the decision official, it'd be Perlman. Of course T.O. will advise him from an AD standpoint, but in the end, it'll be Perlman's decision to make. And since Perlman is fond of academics, I don't see him passing on this opportunity. He knows that NU will get a nice academic ratings boost if they join the Big 10. Plus there is a ton of $$ to be made in research and being a select member of the CIC will give NU opportunities that they didn't have before.

They do and they don't. Notre Dame can always stubbornly refuse to join a conference; that's their prerogative. There are other pressures, however, which may make the decision one of "independence and irrelevance" or "join a conference just to stay alive."

If the Big 10 expands, other conferences will not remain idle. The SEC, in particular, will make moves to become a superconference. They'll target schools with geographic and philosophic similarities to their culture, and the four most obvious are Oklahoma and Texas from the Big 12 and Miami and Florida State from the ACC. If the SEC raids the ACC for Miami and Florida State, the ACC has to respond by acquiring other schools. Their most obvious target is the Big East, which is home to 19 Notre Dame sports. If the Big East becomes a second-tier conference, or worse, dissolves due to ACC poaching, Notre Dame may have no choice but to join the Big 10.

If the SEC goes after Texas and Oklahoma, all this changes and Notre Dame's situation becomes less a matter of outside forces than internal wants. However, if the Big 10 adds Nebraska, Missouri and Rutgers, they could easily tell Notre Dame they're either in or out, meaning that if the Irish remain independent the Big 10 could refuse to play them, putting a huge hurt on Notre Dame's BCS chances with such a huge hit to their SOS.

Why would it become a glorified Sunbelt Conference? The schools involved are too big, have too much tradition and there is too much money involved for it to become a second tier conference. If anything it will become the premier conference, hence all the speculation about other conferences adding teams just to keep up.

This is the future of college football, it is not in our best interest to sit back and wait for it to pass us by.

Some radio station saying multiple sources saying the big ten offord 4 schools, when we all know that the magic number is 1 or 5, is not very creditable. Besides ND has said along they want to remain an independent from a football standpoint.

The Sunbelt comment was way overexagerating and with expansion, I fully expect the B-11 to make a comeback, but without it? Competition wise, it's still about the fourth or fifth toughest conference.
