Courtney Osborne's hit on Gabbert has been sent to Big 12 for review?

Bottom line, if Gabbert and that OSU guy hop up after their hits this is a non-issue. Next time Taylor takes any sort of hard hit I think he should stay down for a few minutes and maybe roll around in "agony" cause that is the only reason they are making a big deal out of these hits.

It's pathetic, I can't wait to get out of this joke of a conference.

People need to understand that the term "Helmet to helmet" doesn't constitute and illegal hit. Just because to helmets collide doesn't make it illegal. It is illegal when the defender leads with the crown of his helmet (eyes down) to make the play, this didn't happen here.

If you watch the slow motion, Gabbert sees Osborne at the last second and ducks his head right into Osborne. Osborne is 6'3, Gabbert is 6'5.

The announcer is really obnoxious. I was at the game, so I didn't hear him going off about "targeting" with his head.

The Mizzou defender that took T-Mart out of the game tackled with his helmet into the legs of the quarterback. Later in the second half, he tried the same thing with Lee. Why isn't that play reviewed? Blow up a knee and end a guys career with your helmet, and that's okay?

I agree with GMoose... If Osborne is suspended, that would start to make the whole situation humorously absurd. Plus, did anyone notice when one of our defenders (lineman I think, near the beginning of the game) got blown up just like Hudson last week? And what is Beebe supposed to do? He's already set the precedent. What an idiot. Did he not see this coming?

Edit: Just watch the hit again, at normal speed. Isn't that how football is played????? Or am I tripping? The refs got the no-call right. Osborne did not even hit him that hard. I'm resisting the urge to rant because this Ed Cunningham guy is a flat-out idiot. I am all for eliminating hits that are malicious. This clearly does not fall in that category.

I was wondering how long it would take for both Osborne and Meredith to be suspended by the Big 12. I would bet that NU is the only school that gets a player suspended for hits like this.

One other school that got a player suspended as the same week as martin, plays in Mississippi.

I think you're getting a little bit too technical with this. A facemask is a part of the helmet. That's kind of like saying "No, Favre didn't need 10 stitches because of helmet to helmet contact. That was clearly helmet-to-chinstrap contact! Totally different! Dur Durrhhhhhh."

And from the picture you posted earlier, it sure looks like Osborne's head is pointed downward. Of course, no official is going to be able to see this in real time.

I'm not saying that Osborne should be suspended. I'm perfectly fine with the dangers present in such a violent sport. What I am against, is people (as you say) trying to ignore what ACTUALLY happened. Do you truly believe that Osborne's facemask, from the picture you posted, is in contact with Gabbert's facemask? If so, I really can't argue with you.

I think the point everyone is trying to make is that the rule shouldn't be interpreted as "helmet-to-helmet" even thought that's what they always call it. It's when a defender leads w/ the crown of his helmet. The same call can be made if he had pierced him in the hip by leading w/ the crown of his helmet. If every "helmet-to-helmet" hit was called, there wouldn't be a play on the field that stood. Look at the white helmets after the game. There's more scratches, dings, and cuts on them than could be counted. So if you're going to suspend a player every time his helmet comes in contact with another helmet...you'd better be prepared to sit half the team each week.

There was a thread about where the crown of the helmet is, but I cant find it anymore. Perhaps it was moved or merged. I was going to post this diagram I found of the location of the crown of the helmet.

Unless they make up new rules out of thin air...then this rule is what constitutes illegal...helmet to helmet contact is going to happen....Martin didn't even lead with the crown of his helmet....ugh!! son of a!!!
