Ohio State officially interviewed Pelini for job

55 months ago NU fans were worried Bill Callahan would bail out on us for a better job. So worried that we gave him a big fat raise. Then we fired him a few months later.

You just can't worry about these things. We pay Bo a fair salary. NU is a high profile, premier program. I don't think he's going to make a move. And if he does we will hire someone else.
The "we" that you speak of was actually just SP ensuring his legacy while at the same time finagling a hefty raise and extension for himself....................
Ha ha! Oh SP ensured his legacy all right. Legacy of getting run out of town on a rail.

There's an article here from Novemeber 23 that lays-out more detail of the supposed discussions. This information was not repeated anywhere else, and the "verbal sparring" between Oz and OSU admins sounds like embellishment.

In fact, according to a trusted source, Smith was still exploring the option of hiring Nebraska coach and former Buckeye safety Bo Pelini and as recently as late last week was putting out feelers to other conference administrators asking if they would approve of Ohio State going after a current conference head coach. The source said that information got back to Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne and when Pelini admitted he was contacted by OSU and expressing interest in the job, the two went at it verbally.
Still, the Pelini experiment was short-lived and not well-received by the OSU board of trustees, who continued to placate Meyer and his agent, Trace Armstrong, a former NFL defensive lineman.
Not all accurate. Pelini has to ask TO for permission to interview for other head coaching jobs.

The article doesn't say he interviewed, just expressed interest. I would not be surprised by this, and in fact believe it to be true. He can express interest all he wants, the next step, interviewing, is when he has to get approval.

Bo didn't talk to Oz about the Miami job discussions last year. TO was caught completely by surprise and stated that he had no knowledge of it. Later, they were characterized as informal talks between Bo and an old associate (who happened to be the Miami AD.) But multiple news outlets insisted they were told by Miami admins off-the-record that Bo interviewed for the job down there.
Its my understanding TO was aware of conversations last spring when OSU reached out. I don't know about the stuff in November. I'll be interested to learn if the talked with Bo about it then or if they were just trying to find if their was any interest now, or what.

The Miami talks were more of an AD picking Bo's brain about who he thought would be good fit. What type of coach they needed there, the facilities, who he thought would be interested, the type of vision the person needed to have etc. and from all of that it turned into an offer from a friend. Kind of like when someone calls looking for a new employee for a managers position and by the time you're done giving names and talking about qualities it turns into an offer from you because you seemed to know what the hell you were talking about when it came to running a department.

If Bo doesn't like the media spot light in Nebraska it won't be different at any of the other major players like OSU, MU, Bama, ATM, etc. Except perhaps that they'll also give him props for doing well and not make it seem like a 9-3 season was a failure and act as though the program is KU. I find it funny the writers here think Turner got the shaft with only 5 wins in 2 years and at least a dozen blow outs but we go 9-3 and we're not really very good because according to one writer off record "we played poor in a few of those wins so really we're 6-6 but we got lucky".

I did talk to one of the players parents when I was at the MU game. The did remark that the didn't think the media would be as ruthless about the athletes and coaches when they sent their kids here to play. They knew the state was crazy about football but they thought the state supported the program along with the media. They feel the media is really out to get the players and the university. One parent said they were sure if they would have sent their son here if they knew it would be this bad.

I don't know about anyone else but I find this statement hilarious. Can anyone on this board really see Dr. Tom Osborne yelling at Bo? I'm sorry, it's just too funny for words to picture!! Can I see them discussing this issue? Sure. And let's be real: This Jeff Rapp guy is all about getting reaction. An 'interview' to him could be nothing more than a phone call but the facts are this: (I think) I'm sure that Bo would have to have permission from the university before he could pursue a face to face interview. I'm listening to 1620 the Zone right now and Damon Benning is on there. Kugler asked him if he believed the rumore and Damon said no. Kugler said he was sceptical too.

If Bo is unhappy at Nebraska then that is another story completely. I just can't see him leaving. He has established himself here, he and his family have embraced Nebraska and here is the most important thing to remember: If Mama is happy EVERYONE is happy. Do you really see Mrs. P having to move/start all over again? I just can't see it. :)

It would be as bad or worse elsewhere. People really wanted Les Miles out at LSU last year, people want Stoops out at OU, and have been calling for his head for years. Meyer has five years, tops, to play for a Nat Champ, or he is gone. The spot light is awful at any football crazy school, I really dont think it would get any better for Bo if he went to tOSU.

I think the verbal altercation thing came from the rumor that Bo and TO where upset with each other and had a big blow out.

The Miami talks were more of an AD picking Bo's brain about who he thought would be good fit. That was the word that came from Nebraska and Bo's camp, but the reporters covering it in Miami still insisted Pelini was discussing being the coach at that school. Bo also secured another raise shortly after this event occurred. I do believe the two are connected, and that would suggest it was more than "picking Bo's brain."

I assure you OSU, Michigan, and Bama fans consider a three-loss season with no chance at a conference title disappointing. Michigan fired Lloyd Carr in a very similar scenario to Solich's dismissal. They're happy this year because of the disaster of Rodriguez stint. Bama fans are nuts. I don't know how you would conclude things are less intense there. If Saban had 9-3 or 10-4 season several years in a row and failed to win the SEC, they would be all over his butt.

So you CAN see Tom and Bo yelling at each other or You agree that this Bo is leaving story is bunk? Please clarify-Thanks :)

Bo would make sure he got permission. A coach not getting permission to interview first is like career suicide in the coaching spectrum. If you do it once, then schools know you would do it again. No school wants a coach who will do that and make them and their school look like a bunch of arses.

Per Sipple's Twitter:

Just talked with Bo Pelini regarding report he interviewed at Ohio State. "There's not truth to any of it," he said. And he wasn't pleased.

People tend to bottom-line things and that is, of course, to be expected. That said, assessing how a coach is doing from simply looking at a record --- a record that includes non-conference games against mostly patsies, no less --- is not a complete enough assessment. If record and record alone is the metric, then we should at least look only at conference-level record + bowls. By that measure, Bo has won 67% of his games. That is... OK. Not bad. Not good if the standard is to be nationally significant. But not bad either. I think that those who state that a 67% winning record in conference play+ bowls would not cut it at major programs are correct. If one were to look at the NU record against ranked teams... that would be... well humbling..

At Bama, Ohio State, USC, LSU, Boise State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon, etc. such a record would not settle well. Texas, you would have to think, must be re-evaluating their coaching staff by now. Does NU aspire to be among that elite a crowd? If so, then the 67% winning percentage (w/o a sustained trend heading upwards) should not settle well.
